Műholdas megfigyelések szerint rengeteg metángáz tör fel a dél-oroszországi Raszpadszkva nevű szénbányából; az adatok alapján ez lehet a valaha észlelt legnagyobb metánszivárgás – számolt be róla a CNN. A portál a GHGSat konstelláció adatai alapján arról ír, hogy a bányából óránként mintegy 90 tonna metán törhet fel.
Ha ez ilyen ütemben folytatódik tovább, akkor a szivárgás mértéke egy év alatt 764 ezer tonnára rúghat.
Ez a mennyiség a számítások alapján nagyjából 2,4 millió háztartás energiaszükségletét fedezné.
A metán üvegházhatású gáz.
A kanadai GHGSat egy hat műholdból álló konstellációt működtet, amik egy nagy felbontású spektrofotométer segítségével érzékelik a metánt. A berendezések a szivárgás pontos forrását is képesek meghatározni. Egy Oroszország fölött tett áthaladást követően a műholdak 13 különböző füstfelhőt észleltek a dél-oroszországi Kemerovo régióban idén januárban.
A következő öt hónapban a vállalat továbbra is folyamatosan észlelte a helyszínen felszabaduló metánt.
A szénbányákból, olaj- és gázfúró platformokból vagy akár üzemanyagvezetékekből származó metánszivárgás nem számít újdonságnak. Általában ezek a szivárgások óránként legfeljebb egy tonnát tesznek ki. Az orosz bánya környékén januárban viszont 50, májusban pedig 10 tonna/óra fölötti értékeket mértek.
A BBC-nek küldött reakciójában az Evraz, az orosz acél- és bányászati óriásvállalat, mely a Raszpadszkva bánya tulajdonosa, tagadta a GHGSat állítását, és azt mondták, hogy a számok irreálisak.
A valaha észlelt legnagyobb metánszivárgás 2015 októberében történt: akkor a Los Angeles-i Aliso Canyon földalatti tárolójából szivárgott a metán. Az a becslések szerint óránként 58 tonna gázt jelentett.
