 A Kaukázusban, az Oroszország déli részén található, Georgiával is határos tagköztársaságban még vasárnap éjjel, moszkvai idő szerint 23.20 körül történt a támadás. A belügyi tárca azt is közölte, hogy a két halott rendőr egy másik, távolabbi régióból, a Kurgani terület rendvédelmében dolgozott. Rajtuk kívül megsérült az orosz Nemzeti Gárda egyik helyi alkalmazottja, valamint a kurgani belügy egyik alkalmazottja is, őket kórházba vitték.
  
 Magáról a támadásról azt írták, hogy a rendvédelmi dolgozók Mara-Ajagy faluban teljesítettek szolgálatot, amikor a fegyveresek rajtuk ütöttek. „A támadók egy VAZ–2109-es gépkocsival egy ideiglenes őrhelyre hajtva robbanószerkezetet dobtak a rendőrök felé, majd automata fegyverekkel tüzet nyitottak. A rendőrök viszonozták a támadókra leadott tüzet, és az egyik bűnözőn felrobbant egy robbanószerkezet” – írták.
 Hozzátették: a helyszínen több rögtönzött robbanószerkezetet is találtak, és a nyomozócsoport és a tűzszerészek még vizsgálódnak.
 Az Associated Press hírügynökség az esettel kapcsolatban megjegyezte, hogy az utóbbi években a Kaukázus északi részén, ezen belül pedig Karacsáj- és Cserkeszföldön is aktívak voltak szélsőséges iszlamista csoportok. Példaként említették, hogy tavaly decemberben az orosz belbiztonság (FSZB) 14 gyanúsítottat vett őrizetbe egy iszlamisták ellen irányuló rendőrségi razzia után.
