A The Guardian értesülései szerint Paul Pelosit otthonában támadták meg, de a célpont valószínűleg nem ő, hanem Nancy Pelosi lehetett, hiszen a betörő erőszakosan lépett fel és életveszélyesen megfenyegette a férfit annak érdekében, hogy találkozhasson Pelosival.
A San Francisco-i rendőrség közlése szerint Paul Pelosinak még éppen időben sikerült felhívnia a 991-et, a történteket azonban nem tudta bejelenteni, a diszpécser ennek ellenére kapcsolt, és kiküldött néhány járőrt a helyszínre. A tisztek kiérkezésükkor lefegyverezték a támadót, majd őrizetbe vették – mondta Bill Scott, a San Francisco-i rendőrség vezetője.
A gyanúsított Scott David DePape elmondása szerint a hátsó ajtón tört be Pelosiékhoz. A várakozások szerint a férfi ellen vádat emelhetnek emberölési kísérlet, halálos fegyverrel elkövetett támadás, idősek bántalmazása, betöréses lopás és egyéb bűncselekmények miatt. DePape péntek este is a kórházban maradt, de állapotáról nem közöltek semmilyen információt.
A CNN arról számolt be, hogy a gyanúsított meg akarta kötözni az áldozatot, „amíg Nancy haza nem ér”, valamint hogy jobboldali és összeesküvés-elméleteket tett közzé az interneten, többek között olyan tartalmakat, amelyek azt hirdették, hogy Donald Trumpot választási csalás miatt fosztották meg a 2020-as választásokon való győzelemtől.
A CNN-nek adott nyilatkozatában DePape egyik ismerőse azt mondta, hogy úgy tűnik, „nincs kapcsolatban a valósággal”. A gyanúsított két rokona is elmondta a csatornának, hogy DePape teljesen elhidegült a családjától.
Bűnösnek vallotta magát Paul Pelosi, a Kalifornia államban lévő Napa megyei bíróság pedig többek közt öt nap börtönre és három év próbaidőre ítélte kedden az amerikai képviselőház demokrata elnöke, Nancy Pelosi férjét, aki még májusban okozott balesetet sportautójával.

Az ítélet szerint emellett részt kell vennie egy három hónapos programban, egy éven át alkoholszondával felszerelt gyújtásgátlót kell használnia autójában, jóvátételt fizetnie, valamint az ítélet 3 év próbaidőt is tartalmaz.

Az ítélethozatal napján, kedden a kaliforniai autópálya-rendőrség nyilvánosságra hozta a baleset utáni rendőri intézkedésről készült, a járőrautó kamerája által rögzített felvételeket. Ezekből az MTI szerint kiderült, hogy Paul Pelosi a baleset után a jogosítványa mellett egy rendőröket segítő szervezet kártyáját is átadta az intézkedő járőröknek. A 11-99 Alapítvány rendőröket támogat és ösztöndíjat biztosít gyermekeik számára.
Az értékelések szerint a felvétel alátámasztja a rendőrségi jelentésben szereplő állítást, ami a részegség „objektíven” megállapítható jeleiről szólt. A baleset után Pelosit letartóztatták, az alkoholteszt megállapította, hogy vérének alkoholtartalma 0,082 százalék volt, ami két ezrelékkel magasabb a megengedettnél.
A bírósági eljárás kezdetekor több kormányzati érdekvédő szervezet is felszólította a bíróságot, hogy ne alkalmazzon semmiféle „kivételes elbírálást” a képviselőházi elnök férjének ügyében.
Nancy Pelosi házelnök nem kommentálta az ítéletet, hivatala úgy fogalmazott, magánügyről van szó.
