Omar García Harfuch rendőrfőnök kórházba került, de az élete nincs veszélyben, bár három lövedék is eltalálta. A helyszínen több személyt letartóztattak. A város főügyésze szerint eddig 12 ember került rendőrkézre.
A lövöldözésben a rendőrfőnök két testőre és egy járókelő életét vesztette.
A rendőrfőnök gépkocsija ellen intézett támadást helyi idő szerint reggel fél hétkor hajtották végre Mexikóváros Paseo de la Reforma nevű elegáns körútján, ahol több nagykövetség is van. A nagy kaliberű fegyvereket használó merénylők kiléte és motivációja egyelőre ismeretlen, de az köztudott, hogy a városban nagyszámú szervezett bűnbanda működik.
Manuel López Obrador mexikói elnök egy üzenetben támogatását ígérte a város vezetésének, és közbiztonsági erőinek. Mexikóvárosban idén májusban 115 gyilkosságot követtek el.
