Roman Malik rejtélyes halálának körülményei egyelőre tisztázatlanok. Helyi sajtóhírek szerint Malikot felakasztva találták az otthonában. A hatóságok gyilkosság miatt indítottak nyomozást az ügyben, de nem zárták ki annak lehetőségét, hogy a férfi önkezével vethetett véget az életének. Családtagjai szerint azonban kizárt, hogy Malik öngyilkos lett volna – írja a Euro Weekly News orosz forrásokra hivatkozva.
Sajtóértesülések szerint Roman Malik részt vett a csecsen hadjáratokban, majd különböző beosztásokban dolgozott a hadkiegészítő parancsnokságon, haláláig a toborzóiroda vezetője volt. Malik állítólag Vlagyimir Putyin orosz elnök közeli munkatársa volt.

A városvezetés közlése szerint a katona tragikus hirtelenséggel hunyt el. „Egy erős és bátor ember szíve megállt, aki nehéz időszakon ment keresztül, de nem tört meg a súlyos katonai események és a súlyos veszteségek súlya alatt” – írták.
