A Newsweek az idahói állami rendőrség közlése nyomán számolt be arról, hogy csak egy kisbaba élte túl azt a tragikus balesetet, melyben egy autó ütközött egy vonattal. A közlemény szerint a Shubin család egy vasúti átjárón haladt át az észak-idahói Bonner megyében szombaton amikor összeütköztek egy érkező vonattal.
A tragikus balesetben a szülők és a baba testvére is életüket vesztették.
A 37 éves Mickey, a 31 éves Akasha és fiuk, Jonathan mind életüket vesztették, csak a legkisebb családtag, Charlotte Lynn élte túl. A rendőrség nem sokkal a 11 óra 44 perckor történt baleset után érkezett ki a helyszínre. A sajtóközleményben részletesen is beszámoltak a tragédiáról:
„Egy Subaru Forester vezetője kelet felé haladt a W. Selle Roadon. A Subaru nem adta meg az elsőbbséget egy dél felé haladó tehervonatnak. A Subaru a vonatnak ütközött, ami a járművet az úttestről leszorította, ahol az felborult. A Subaruban egy 37 éves férfi sofőr, egy 31 éves nő és két fiatalkorú ült. Minden utas bekapcsolta a biztonsági övet. Mindkét felnőttet és az egyik fiatalkorút a helyszínen elhunytnak nyilvánították.”
A közleményből az is kiderült, hogy a túlélő gyermeket mentőautóval egy közeli kórházba, majd egy washingtoni kórházba szállították. A rendőrség közlése szerint a tehervonat kezelői nem sérültek meg.

A kilencszintes épület szombat hajnalban dőlt össze, de egyelőre nem tudni, hogy mi okozta a tragédiát. A szomszédos épületek állapotának felmérésére építészeti bizottságot állított fel a kairói kormányzói hivatal.
Eddig 25 ember holtteste került elő a romok alól, köztük a megmentett kisbaba édesapja, édesanyja és nővére is. A kisfiú bátyját egyelőre nem találták meg.
A kisbaba állapota a hatóságok szerint stabil.
Egyiptomban nem ritkák a hasonló balesetek, mert a nyomornegyedekben és a szegényebb kerületekben az építési előírásokat nem mindig tartják be. Emellett a lakosság rohamosan nő, Kairóban és Alexandriában az ingatlanárak meredeken emelkedtek az elmúlt években, és az ingatlanfejlesztők a nagyobb profit reményében gyakorta semmibe veszik a kiadott építési engedélyeket, és előfordul, hogy egy-egy épületre több emeletet építenek, mint amennyit a hatóságok jóváhagytak.
