A hatalmas, jelenleg 40 méter széles és 15 méter mély víznyelő Jasio város egyik forgalmas kereszteződésében keletkezett, és azóta is folyamatosan tágul.
Kezdetben 5 méter széles és 10 méter mély volt, amikor elnyelte a teherautót, de a folyamatos erózió és másodlagos omlások miatt a mérete azóta jelentősen megnőtt.
A laza talaj és az instabil környezet miatt a mentők számára rendkívül veszélyes a kutatás. A tűzoltók megpróbálták elérni a sofőrt, de vissza kellett vonulniuk, miután két csapattag megsérült a rájuk zúduló földtől.
A sofőr, aki közvetlenül az eset után még válaszolt a mentőknek, azóta nem adott életjelet.
A törmelék eltávolítása kiemelt feladattá vált, de nehézgépeket csak korlátozottan lehet használni, mivel az újabb omlások teljesen betemethetik a sofőrt, mielőtt sikerülne kimenteni. A hatóságok az 50 méteres körzetben élő több mint száz lakost már a múlt héten kiköltöztették, és vasárnap újabb tucatnyi embert evakuáltak – számolt be róla a The Japan Times. Emellett a környező Saitama prefektúra 1,2 millió lakosát arra kérték, hogy takarékoskodjanak a vízzel, hogy csökkentsék a földalatti csatornarendszer terhelését és mérsékeljék az újabb omlások esélyét.

A hatóságok korábban sikeresen kiemelték a teherautó rakodóplatformját a víznyelőből, de a fülkéhez nem tudtak hozzáférni. A keresést vasárnap áthelyezték egy közeli csatornába, ahol a sofőrülés egy darabját is megtalálták.

Mérnökök és különböző szakemberek is ellátogattak már a hatalmas lyukhoz, és becslésük szerint a talajvízzel teli gödör 18 méter mély lehet – írja a New York Post.
Arra kérték továbbá a lakosságot, hogy ne közelítsék meg a nyílást.
A helyiek arról számoltak be, hogy egy mennydörgő hangot hallottak, mielőtt megtalálták volna a hatalmas gödröt. Hozzátették, hogy nem tudnak visszatérni a házukhoz, mert a kráter közelében összeomolhat a házuk. Szerintük a szántóföldet egy korábbi nagy tó felett hozták létre.
