Незадовго до офіційного оголошення про смерть монарха кувейтське державне телебачення перервало попередню програму й почало транслювати аяти (вірші, – ред.) з Корану, що відбувається в аравійських монархіях у разі смерті найбільш високопоставлених членів правлячої династії.
Шейх Сабах аль-Ахмед аль-Джабер ас-Сабах перебував на лікуванні в США, у липні його прооперували у зв’язку з неназваною хворобою.
Він став еміром Кувейту та керував ОПЕК з 2006 року, а до того майже 50 років очолював зовнішню політику Об’єднаних Арабських Еміратів.
Його місце, імовірно, займе його зведений брат, спадкоємець престолу, принц шейх Наваф аль-Ахмед аль-Джабер ас-Сабах Наваф ель-Ахмад ель-Джабір Аль-Сабах, який стане главою Кувейту.
