Közlése szerint a Galgadud régióban lezajlott kormányzati hadművelet annak ellenére sikeres volt, hogy az összecsapásban több kormánykatona is megsebesült. A szóvivő hozzátette, hogy az akció komoly előrelépést jelent a terrorizmus sújtotta középső régió békéjének és stabilitásának helyreállításában.
Szomáliában tavaly augusztusban hirdetett totális háborút az al-Shabaab ellen Haszan Sejk Mohamud elnök.
A lázadószervezet több mint egy évtizede jelent folyamatos fenyegetést a szomáliai lakosságra; bár 2011-ben sikerült kiszorítani az ország fővárosából, Mogadishuból, továbbra is ellenőrzése alatt tart egyes vidéki területeket, és azóta is rendszeresen követ el támadásokat kormányzati épületek, szállodák és közintézmények ellen.

A 16 millió lakosú Szomáliából 2024 végéig kivonulnak az Afrikai Unió békefenntartói, akik eddig hat katonai támaszpontot adtak át a szomáliai hadseregnek.

Több mint 100, az al-Shabaab terrorszervezethez tartozó fegyveressel végeztek a szomáliai kormányerők pénteken az afrikai ország középső részén – közölték szomáliai katonai források.
A harcokat Galgudud térségéből jelentették, ahol napok óta összecsapások zajlanak egy, a katonaság által néhány napja visszafoglalt katonai támaszpont körül.
A bázist a szomáliai hadsereg amerikai kiképzésben részesült egysége irányítja, az ellene intézett támadást visszaverték, a tűzharcban életét vesztette a támaszpont parancsnokhelyettese is.
A közelben lakók a sajtónak azt mondták, a támaszpontról több robbanást is hallottak, a bázis egyik tisztje pedig azt közölte, a terroristák ellen harci drónokat is bevetettek. Az iszlamisták jelentkeztek az akció elkövetőiként, és bár a támaszpontot nem sikerült visszafoglalniuk, sikeresnek minősítették akciójukat. Szóvivőjük szerint több mint 150 katonát öltek meg.
A szomáliai vezetés tavaly augusztusban indított offenzívát az al-Shabaab ellen, s azóta a hadsereg a helyi klánok és felfegyverzett civilek segítségével jelentős területeket foglalt vissza az iszlamistáktól. A műveleteket Törökország és az Egyesült Államok drónokkal támogatja. Újévi köszöntőjében Hassan Sheikh Mohamud szomáliai elnök azt ígérte, hogy 2023 során teljesen megsemmisítik a terroristaszervezetet.
