  Az iráni legfelsőbb bíróság ítélete szerint Akbari a brit hírszerzés egyik legfontosabb ügynöke volt, több államtitkot árult el megbízóinak. Nagy-Britannia politikai indíttatásúnak minősítette a halálbüntetés kiszabását, és azonnali szabadon bocsátását kérte.
 A BBC Persian szerdán sugárzott hangfelvételén Akbari azt mondta, hogy kínzások hatására vallott be olyan bűncselekményeket, amelyeket el sem követett. Ali Reza Akbari 1997 és 2005 között volt védelmi miniszterhelyettes a reformpárti Mohammad Katami iráni elnöke alatt, és szószólója volt az iráni nukleáris megállapodásnak, amely 2015-ben született meg a Nyugat és Teherán között. Az elmúlt hónapokban megromlottak a kapcsolatok Nagy-Britannia és Irán között, mivel a London részvételével is létrejött 2015-ös nukleáris egyezmény újraélesztésére irányuló erőfeszítések elakadtak.
