 З настанням літа танення снігу та льоду починається й на Північному полюсі, а внаслідок цього виникають лісові пожежі.
 2020 рік став найгіршим щодо арктичних лісових пожеж за всю історію спостережень, які почалися 17 років тому, відзначають учені. Через пожежі в Арктиці цього літа тільки за першу половину липня утворилося стільки вуглецю, скільки за рік виділяють такі країни, як Куба або Туніс.
 Згідно з даними Служби моніторингу атмосфери Copernicus, організації Європейського Союзу з моніторингу Землі, з початку червня в Арктиці сталося понад 100 пожеж.
 «Звичайно, це викликає занепокоєння. Ми дійсно не очікували побачити таку кількість лісових пожеж», – сказав старший науковий співробітник Copernicus Марк Паррінгтон.
 Що таке «зомбі-пожежі»?
 Так звані «зомбі-пожежі» – це процес тління, який відбувається під льодом і снігом у багатій на вуглець торф’яній арктичній тундрі. Коли замерзлий шар тане, ці гарячі точки можуть спричинити лісові пожежі в рослинності вище.
 Відтак з торфу вивільняються вуглець і метан, парникові гази, які ще більше сприяють потеплінню планети.
 Як довго може тривати така ситуація?
 Арктичні пожежі тривають із травня по жовтень, а найсильніші зазвичай трапляються з липня по серпень. Сезон пожеж 2019-го побив усі попередні рекорди за кількістю пожеж та викидів вуглецю, але нинішній уже випереджає й показники минулого року.
 За оцінкою Copernicus, з січня по серпень унаслідок пожеж виділилися 244 мегатонни вуглецю.
 Крім того, пожежі спричинили інші забруднення, які погіршили якість повітря в Європі, Росії та Канаді. Учені очікують, що аналогічні умови триватимуть у 2021 році й далі.
