 A bizalmas dokumentumokra és a műveletben közvetlenül résztvevők beszámolójára hivatkozó anyag szerint a két légicsapást az Iszlám Állam terrorszervezet akkori szíriai bázisánál, Bagúznál hajtották végre 2019. márciusában, és a halottak között akár 64 civil, köztük nők és gyerekek is lehettek.
 
 A lap szerint a légierő egyik, a bombázások idején a műveleti központban tartózkodó  jogásza elmondta, hogy háborús bűncselekmény gyanúja miatt a légicsapások után felvette a kapcsolatot a védelmi minisztériummal és az amerikai szenátus fegyveres erőkkel foglalkozó bizottságával.
 Ezzel kapcsolatban a The New York Times hozzáteszi, hogy az ügyben mind ez idáig nem indult független vizsgálat. A bombázásokat a héten ismerte el először az Egyesült Államok hadseregének a szíriai műveletekért is felelős közel-keleti és közép-ázsiai műveleteit irányító parancsnoksága (Centcom), ám a műveleteket jogosnak és arányosnak nevezték.
 Jóllehet a Cenctcom közleményében elismerték, hogy a műveletben hozzávetőleg nyolcvananan meghaltak, köztük az Iszlám Állam 16 tagja és négy civil, az áldozatok nagy részének a kilétét azonban nem tudják, és hangsúlyozták, hogy „nők és gyerekek is harcoltak a terroristák soraiban”.
 A Centcom részéről leszögezték, hogy műveleteik során mindent megtesznek a civilek védelmében, az ominózus légicsapásokkal kapcsolatban pedig lefolytatták az ilyenkor szokásos vizsgálatot, és teljes felelősséget vállalnak.
 A közlemény szerint a bombázások előtt az amerikai erőkkel szövetséges Szíriai Demokratikus Erők (SDF) nevű kurd-arab milíciaszövetség – amely annak idején elkeseredett harcot vívott a terroristákkal a szárazföldön – biztosította a légierőt arról, hogy a térségben nincsenek civilek.
