Figyelmes szemlélődők gyors közbeavatkozásával mentették meg az amerikai történelem egy fontos részét. Észrevették ugyanis, hogy egy tetőtől talpig fekete ruhába öltözött nő benzint locsolt Martin Luther King atlantai szülőházára, de már nem tudta felgyújtani – tudósított a BBC.
Először a turisták azt hitték, hogy a nő a virágokat locsolja meg, csak később esett le nekik, hogy a ház falát. Arra viszont már nem volt ideje, hogy az öngyújtójáért elmenjen, és lángba borítsa az épületet.
King 12 éves koráig élt itt, a házat 2018-ban vásárolta meg a helyi nemzeti park, és november vége óta a felújítások miatt a ház nem látogatható. A rendőrök helyi idő szerint csütörtökön 17:45-kor kaptak riasztást, és gyorsan a helyszínre érkeztek.
Később a 26 éves nő édesapja és három nővére is a helyszínre érkezett, akik elmondták, hogy mentális problémái vannak a gyanúsítottnak.

Az amerikai hatóságok szerint a tüntető benzint locsolt magára, mielőtt felgyújtotta magát. Hozzátették, az illetőnél egy palesztin zászló is volt.
A BBC hangsúlyozza, a szóban forgó személy neme és kora egyelőre nem ismert. Mint írták, a történtek miatt az ott tartózkodó biztonsági őr égési sérüléseket szenvedett, miután megpróbálta megakadályozni az elkövető tettét. A tüntetőt és az őrt is kórházba szállították.
Izrael délkelet-amerikai főkonzulja, Anat Sultan-Dadon az eset után úgy nyilatkozott, hogy „szomorú az irodaház bejáratánál történt önfelgyújtás miatt”.
„Tragikus látni, hogy az Izrael iránti gyűlölet és uszítás ilyen szörnyű módon fejeződik ki”– mondta.
Helyi idő szerint péntek reggel 7 órakor lejárt az Izrael és a Hamász között hét napja tartó tűzszünet. Az izraeli hadsereg (IDF) bejelentette, hogy folytatja a harcot a Hamász ellen.
Amerikai tisztviselők figyelmeztettek, hogy a harcokkal párhuzamosan kiújulhatnak az antiszemita és az iszlamofób megnyilvánulások is.

Az atlantai rendőrök legalább hat embert letartóztattak, miután a szombati békés tüntetés káoszba és erőszakba torkollott a Fox News beszámolója szerint. A város polgármestere azt mondta: a tüntetők ablakokat törtek be és egy rendőrautót is felgyújtottak. A FOX atlantai csatornája arról számolt be, hogy a randalírozók tűzijátékkal lőtték és kövekkel dobálták az Atlantai Rendőrségi Alapítvány épületét. A zavargásokat egy aktivista, a 26 éves Manuel Esteban Paez Terant halála váltotta ki, akit megöltek a rendőrök.
A sajtótájékoztatón Andre Dickens polgármester azt mondta, hogy az elfogott személyeknél robbanószereket is találtak.
Andre Dickens hangsúlyozta, tudomásul kell venni, hogy ezek az egyének fenyegetést jelentenek a közösségre és a tulajdonra nézve. A polgármester kiemelte, hogy a tüntetők jelentős része nem atlantai, még csak nem is Georgia államban él, és egyáltalán nem az atlantai emberek általános véleményét képviselik a rendrőséggel kapcsolatban.
„Atlanta biztonságban van, a rendőreink megoldották a belvárosban kialakult kora esti rendbontást” – mondta Andre Dickens. A városvezető hangsúlyozta: „Atlanta városa és az atlantai rendőrség továbbra is védi a békés tiltakozáshoz való jogot. De nem tűrjük meg az erőszakot vagy a tulajdon rongálását”.
A Twitteren megosztott videók tanúsága szerint a zavargásokért a szélsőbaloldali Antifa csoport tehető felelőssé. Az arcukat maszkkal eltakaró, feketébe öltözött tüntetők a Black Lives Matter mozgalmat éltető plakáttal, s egyben az atlantai „rendőrváros” ellen tiltakozva vonultak fel az utcán.

Halálos lövöldözésbe torkollt egy vita, amely ellenséges Facebook-kommentek miatt robbant ki tinédzserek között az Egyesült Államokban. Az atlantai lövöldözésben két kamasz meghalt, hárman megsérültek. A helyi rendőrfőnök szerint túl sok kamasznak van fegyvere.
Két tinédzser meghalt, többen pedig megsérültek egy lövöldözésben Atlanta államban szombaton – számolt be a Fox News internetes kiadása.
A rendőrség szerint egy, a közösségi médiában elfajult vita miatt halt meg egy 14 és egy 16 éves kamasz Atlantában, egy külvárosi lakónegyedben.
A lövöldözésben megsérült három kamaszt – egy 15 és egy 11 éves fiút, valamint egy 15 éves lányt – kórházba szállították, állapotukról egyelőre további információt a hatóságok nem szolgáltattak.
A bűncselekmény szombaton öt óra tájban következett be, amikor a külvárosi lakóparknál két, fegyveres, egymással viszálykodó csoport találkozott; ekkor dördültek el a végzetes lövések, amelyek kioltották két fiatal életét.
Charles Hampton Jr. rendőrfőnök-helyettes közölte: „Nagyon szomorú vagyok, hogy lövöldözésbe keveredett kamaszokról kell beszéljek. Megkérjük a szülőket, mindig tudjanak róla, merre járnak a gyerekeik, és ellenőrizzék a szobáikat, ugyanis túl sok fegyver van kamaszok kezében”.
A rendőrtiszt emlékeztetett arra is, hogy az év ezen időszaka a közelgő karácsonyról szól, ám most két család ehelyett temetni készül halott gyermekeit.

„A békés tüntetéseket veszélyes, kártékony bűnözők kerítették hatalmukba. Ártatlan georgiaiakat vesznek célba, lőnek agyon, hagynak meghalni az utcán” – áll a kormányzó közleményében. „Ennek a törvénytelen állapotnak véget kell vetni, és helyre kell állítani a rendet államunk fővárosában”. Hozzáfűzte azt is, hogy „elég volt a beszédből, meg kell védenünk valamennyi georgiai életét és megélhetését”, írta.
A hétvégén két másik amerikai nagyvárosban is elszabadult a fegyveres erőszak. New Yorkban 44 embert lőttek meg, Chicagóban pedig 17 halálos áldozatot és több mint 70 sebesültet hagytak maguk után a lövöldözések.
