A jármű „összezúzta az úton lévő autókat”, és „12 ember meghalt” – mindannyian halálra égtek, mondta William Ovye Aya a Kogi rendőrparancsnokságtól.



Bisi Kazeem a nigériai Szövetségi Közlekedésbiztonsági Testülettől azt mondta, hogy 18 ember volt érintett a balesetben. Heten „különböző fokú sérüléseket szenvedtek, míg a maradék 11 a felismerhetetlenségig megégett” a helyszínen, mondta Kazeem egy nyilatkozatban.

Az első híradások még negyven áldozatról szóltak, később a hírügynökségnek Patrick Almonor, a város alpolgármestere már 53 halálos áldozatról és több mint száz sérültről számolt be.
A robbanás helyszínének közelében mintegy 20 ház leégett.



A vársovezető azt mondta, hogy a sérültek ellátásához a helyi kórháznak szüksége van ápolókra, orvosokra és orvosi felszerelésekre is.
Ariel Henry miniszterelnök a Twitteren azt írta, hogy helyszíni mobilkórházakat telepítenek a környékre, hogy biztosítsák a szükséges ellátást. A kormányfő azt is bejelentette, hogy

Az AP beszámolója szerint még órákkal a robbanás után is a környéken holtestek hevertek az utcákon. Egy szemtanú a hírügynökségnek azt is elmondta, hogy a tragédia után több embert is látott, akik vödrökkel próbálták a kifolyt benzint összegyűjteni.
