Az Új-Dél Walesi tartományi rendőrség szóvivője szerint február 16-án szerdán emberi testrészmaradványokat emeltek partra a Sidney közelében, az ausztrál nagyvárostól dél-keletre fekvő Little Bay Beach melletti Malabar strandján, miután bejelentést kaptak, hogy Buchanan Point-nál cápatámadás ért egy fürdőzőt.
A bejelentés a helyi vízi mentőktől érkezett. 1963 óta ez az első nem provokált halálos kimenetelű cápatámadás Sidney környékén.
Az Új-dél Walesi mentőszolgálat szóvivője azt nyilatkozta az ausztrál The Guardian-nek, hogy az áldozatot ért „katasztrofális sérülések” miatt a kiérkező mentők már nem tudtak segíteni a férfin. Az egyik szemtanú azt nyilatkozta a hírportálnak, már az első pillatban látszott, hogy az úszót súlyosan megsebesítette a cápa, mert az áldozat vére vörösre színezte a környező vizet.
A másik szemtanú, aki a támadás pillanatában egy, a helyszínhez közeli sziklákon horgászott, azt mondta az ABC-nek, hogy az úszó búvárruhát viselt, és egy „szemmel láthatóan nagy cápa” húzta le a felszín alá, a támadás pedig több másodpercig tartott. „Amikor a cápa a felszín alá rántotta, fröcskölt a vére. Szörnyű látvány volt, még most is remegek, és hányinger kínoz” – fűzte hozzá a szemtanú.
