Egy hétmérföldes partszakaszt kellett lezárni Dél-Kaliforniában, miután 6-7 gallon nyers szennyvíz ömlött a Dominguez-csatornába Los Angeles kikötőjének közelében. A szivárgást egy 48 hüvelykes fő csatornavezeték meghibásodása okozta, amelynek okát még nem tisztázták.
Janice Hahn Los Angeles megyei felügyelő közegészségügyi kivizsgálást követel annak kiderítésére, hogy elöregedő vagy hibás infrastruktúra okozta-e a szennyezést, és hozzátette, „egy ilyen mértékű szennyvízkiömlés veszélyes és elfogadhatatlan, és meg kell értenünk, miért történt”.
Hahn szerint a korábbi vihar hozzájárulhatott a szivárgáshoz, és olyan infrastruktúra kiépítését szorgalmazza, ami nem megy tönkre, ha esik – számolt be az RT.
A szivárgást csütörtökön fedezték fel, és miután a város vízminőségével foglalkozó csapatai elvégezték tesztjeiket, számos strandon megtiltották a fürdőzést, ameddig a baktériumok száma a biztonságos szint alá nem csökken.
A szennyvízcunami sok ember számításait keresztülhúzta, turisták tömege utazott a viszonylag meleg Dél-Kaliforniába, hogy úszással, szörföléssel vagy más módon búcsúztassa az óévet. A San Pedro-i Cabrillo Beach a 70. Jegesmedve-úszást is kénytelen volt lemondani, amelyen általában több száz ember veti magát a hideg vízbe újév napján.
