Több tucat maszkos palesztinpárti aktivista foglalta el szerdán a belgiumi Genti Egyetem (UGent) rektori hivatalát, tiltakozásul az intézmény izraeli partnerekkel folytatott együttműködése ellen.
A belga sajtó tudósítása szerint mintegy 40 fős csoport szerda reggel hat óra után tört be az épületbe, majd a tetőre is felmászott, transzparenseket helyezett ki és graffitikkel fújta le a falakat. A rendőrség a helyszínt távolról figyeli, miközben egyeztetéseket folytat az egyetem vezetésével. A hatóságok közlése szerint céljuk a párbeszéd a demonstrálókkal. A helyszínre végrehajtó is érkezett, hogy hivatalos jegyzőkönyvet készítsen a történtekről.
Az aktivisták öt hete tartó tiltakozó akciójukat fokozzák annak érdekében, hogy az egyetem teljesen szüntesse meg izraeli intézményekkel való kapcsolatait.
Petra De Sutter rektor a múlt héten jelentette be, hogy az egyetem felgyorsítja a még fennmaradó, problémásnak minősített öt együttműködés megszüntetését.
Kedden több egyetemi épületet is megrongáltak; az épületfoglalók szerint ez nem az ő szervezésükben történt. Az egyetem közölte: az erőszakmentes tiltakozás elfogadható határait átlépték, és nem zárta ki, hogy az újabb akció miatt véget vet az elfoglalásnak. Hasonló intézkedésre két évvel ezelőtt is sor került, amikor a rektori hivatalnál tartott tiltakozások elfajultak.
A demonstrálók elismerték, hogy törvényt sértenek. Egy szóvivőjük szerint az egyetem évek óta megszegi saját szabályait és megállapodásait az izraeli intézményekkel folytatott együttműködésekkel, és ezzel „részese a gázai népirtásnak”. Hozzátette: addig folytatják a tiltakozásokat, amíg változás nem történik.
Az egyetem közölte: jelenleg értékeli a kialakult helyzetet, és egyelőre nem kíván további nyilatkozatot tenni.

Több száz embert őrizetbe vettek a hatóságok pénteken New Yorkban egy zsidó mozgalom által szervezett, a Gázai övezet izraeli bombázása elleni tüntetésen – közölte a rendőrség és a szervezők.
A New York-i rendőrség legalább 200 ember őrizetbe vételéről számolt be, a szervezők pedig azt állították, hogy több mint 300 embert tartóztattak le, amikor a tüntetést a New York-i Grand Central pályaudvaron belül feloszlatták.

A Gázai övezetet uraló Hamász fegyveresei október 7-én meglepetésszerű támadást indítottak Izrael ellen, betörtek az ország déli részébe, több mint 1400 embert meggyilkoltak, további mintegy háromezret megsebesítettek, valamint mintegy 230 embert elraboltak és túszként tartanak fogva.
