A három kilométer magas Bezimjannij a világ egyik legaktívabb tűzhányója, a félsziget fővárosától, Petropavlovszk-Kamcsatszkijtól mintegy 350 kilométerre található. A térségében átmenetileg a legmagasabb, vörös veszélyességi fokozatot hirdették ki miatta a légi közlekedésre. Az orosz polgári védelem szerint azonban lakott területekre és az idegenforgalomra nem jelentett veszélyt.
A Moszkvától mintegy 6600 kilométerre keletre fekvő félsziget a világ egyik legnagyobb geotermikus aktivitású területe, nagyjából 30 aktív vulkánt tartanak rajta számon. A vulkanikus régió az UNESCO természeti világörökségi helyszínei között szerepel.
A Bezimjannij legemlékezetesebb kitörése 1956-ban volt, amikor az akkor 3080 méter magas tűzhányó csaknem egy köbkilométer vulkanikus anyagot lövellt a levegőbe rövid idő alatt, és emiatt magassága 280 méterrel csökkent.
