A tolvajok az említett járművek feltöltéséhez szükséges kábeleket lopják el, majd adják el akár 200 fontért. A bűncselekedetet leggyakrabban töltőállomásokon követik el, de előfordul, hogy az autók csomagtartójából szedik ki a több méteres vezetéket.

Az elkövetők a vezetékeket általában az autók csomagtartójából szedik ki, illetve a töltőpontokon felügyelet nélkül hagyott, töltött járművekből húzzák ki. Ezután a lopott tartozékot olyan weboldalakon árulják, mint például a Facebook vagy az eBay. Továbbá előfordul, hogy a kábeleket fémhulladék-kereskedőknek adják el a bennük megtalálható réz miatt.
Andrew Gillespie, az EV Cable Shop weboldal ügyvezető igazgatója szerint: a kábelek ellopása nagyon egyszerű feladat, amivel a tolvajok könnyen juthatnak bevételhez. Hozzátette, hogy a probléma elkerülésének érdekében a tulajdonosoknak érdemes lenne egy olyan nagy teherbírású, műanyag láncot beszerezniük, amivel megakadályozhatják a töltőkábeleik ellopását.
