A heves esőzések által előidézett villámáradások következtében legalább 5 ember vesztette életét Indonézia fő szigetén.
A hatósági beszámolók szerint az öt halálos áldozaton felül még legalább négy embert tartanak eltűntként nyilván – tudósított róla az Al Jazeera hírtelevízió. A katasztrófavédelem szerint a tragédiát az Arjuno hegy lábánál fekvő folyó megáradása okozta.
A folyó ugyanis kilépett medréből és az egyébként sárral keveredő víz ellepte a Kelet-Jáva tartományban található Kota Batu városát. Az áradások eredetileg 15 embert sodortak el, azonban ötöt közülük azóta sikerült megtalálni.
A katasztrófavédelem ráadásul elmondta, hogy a heves esőzések várhatóan csak növekedni fognak februárig, így több hasonló tragédiákra is lehet számítani. Indonéziában egyébként sem ritkák a zord időjárási körülmények, földcsuszamlások és áradások.
A mentési munkálatokat nagy mértékben nehezíti a töménytelen sár és törmelék, ami az áradással járt. Az ország más pontján is jelentettek áradásokról, azok azonban nem jártak halálos áldozatokkal.
