 A hatóságok szerint a mogadishui merénylet célpontja Mohamed Ibrahim Malimuu, a kormány szóvivője volt, akit kórházba szállítottak, sérülései nem életveszélyesek.
 Abdilfatah Aden rendőrségi szóvivő arról tájékoztatott, hogy a merényletet Mogadishu belvárosában követték el, ahol több kormányépület, étterem és áruház is található.
 A fővárosban nem ez az első merénylet a héten: szerdán autóba rejtett pokolgép robbant a repülőtér felé vezető út mentén, a merényletben – amelynek elkövetéséért az al-Kaidához köthető al-Shabaab terrorszervezet jelentkezett – legalább 11-en meghaltak, és 10-en megsebesültek – tudatta az MTI.
 Az al-Shabaab számos hasonló merényletet követett el. A dzsihadista szervezet évek óta harcol Szomália központi kormánya ellen, hogy az iszlám törvénykezés (saría) szigorú értelmezésén alapuló saját uralmát megteremtse.
