 Meghaladta az 1,3 ezer főt a Szaúd-Arábiában a mekkai zarándoklat során elhunyt személyek száma, többségében nem regisztrált zarándokok, jelentette be Fahd bin Abdel Rahman al-Jalajel egészségügyi miniszter június 23-án, vasárnap.
  
 „A haddzs során 1301 ember halt meg. „A halottak 83%-ának nem volt megfelelő vízuma” – mondta a miniszter.
 Megjegyezte, hogy a vízum hozzáférést biztosít a zarándok számára a szaúdi hatóságok által szervezett, légkondicionált létesítményekhez a zarándoklat útvonalán.
 A miniszter hozzátette, hogy a legtöbb esetben a halál kiszáradás és fizikai kimerültség miatt következett be, amit rendkívüli hőség okoz. A hőmérséklet ezekben a napokban Mekkában elérte a plusz 47 fokot.
 Szaúd-Arábia megköveteli minden zarándoktól, hogy vásároljon egyet az 1,8 millió engedély közül, amely legális belépést biztosít Mekkába. Ezek a licencek több ezer dollárba is kerülhetnek. Az engedéllyel nem rendelkező zarándokok általában nem utaznak szervezett, légkondicionált turistabuszokon, és nem jutnak ingyenesen vízhez és élelemhez.
 A haddzs – muszlim zarándokút Mekkába. Minden muszlimnak, aki képes erre, életében legalább egyszer végre kell hajtania a haddzsot. 2024-ben körülbelül 1,83 millió zarándok hajtotta végre a haddzsot, ebből 1,6 millió külföldi volt.
 Tavaly legkevesebb 240 ember halt meg a haddzs során. 10 000 zarándok lett rosszul a hőség miatt.
