A libériai zászló alatt hajózó jármű 640 konténert, köztük veszélyes anyagot tartalmazó 13 konténert szállított, a tárca ugyanakkor nem pontosította, hogy milyen jellegű veszélyes rakományról van szó. A hajó szombaton került vészhelyzetbe és segélykérést is leadott – ismertette az indiai haditengerészet.
A segítség kiérkezésekor a hajó már veszélyesen az oldalára dőlt, de szerencsére a 24 fős legénységet sikerült kimenteni.
A tájékoztatás szerint orosz, ukrán, grúz, illetve Fülöp-szigeteki állampolgárságú matrózok voltak a fedélzeten.
A haditengerészet beszámolója szerint a fedélzeten volt 12 konténer kalcium-karbid, amelyet a vegyiiparban egyebek között műtrágya gyártására használnak.
A haditengerészet hangsúlyozta, hogy tekintettel az érzékeny tengeri ökológiai rendszerre Kerala partjai előtt, igyekeznek a szennyezést kordában tartani. A hajó emellett nagyjából 370 tonna üzemanyagot, illetve olajat is szállított.
A parti őrség közölte, hogy bevetettek egy észlelőrendszert, de eddig nem lelték nyomát szennyezésnek.
