A metánfoltot május 10-én észlelték, mintegy 125 kilométerre keletre a Sasol ipari vállalattól, amely bányászattal, vegyi és üzemanyagiparral foglalkozik.
A gázfelhő óránként 65 tonna sebességgel mozgott, 2021 kezdete óta rekordot állított fel a káros kibocsátások tekintetében Dél-Afrikában. A Sasol képviselői azt állítják, hogy a bányákban lévő eszközök érzékelői aznap nem rögzítettek túlzott kibocsátási határértékeket.
A metánt a globális üvegházhatás egyik fő okának tekintik. Levegőben tartózkodásának első 20 évében a gáz körülbelül 84-szer több hőt képes megfogni, mint a CO2 (szén-dioxid).
