Kedden történt lövöldözés egy texasi iskolában, amelyben 19 gyermek vesztette életét, valamint elhunyt két pedagógus is, miután az elkövető a saját mamáját is fejbe lőtte, aki kritikus állapotban van kórházban.
Az újságírók kérdésére Steven McCraw ezredes, a texasi közbiztonsági minisztérium munkatársa bírálta a lövöldözésre adott rendőri reakciót, ugyanis úgy véli, túl sokáig tartott, amíg kapcsolatba léptek a fegyveressel.
Ugyanis nem próbáltak meg behatolni az osztályterembe, és felvenni a harcot a merénylővel, hanem az akció parancsnoka úgy döntött, hogy „van idő a kulcsok megszerzésére, és megvárni, amíg egy taktikai csapat a felszereléssel előre megy, áttöri az ajtót, és felveszi a harcot az alannyal“ – írja a CNN.
„Utólag, ahol most ülök, természetesen nem ez volt a helyes döntés. Rossz döntés volt, pont. Erre nincs mentség. De még egyszer mondom, én nem voltam ott“ – tette hozzá McCraw.
Elmondta, hogy „úgy gondoljuk, hogy a lehető leghamarabb kellett volna belépni“, és hozzátette, hogy „amikor aktív lövöldöző van, a szabályok megváltoznak“.
Arra nem adott magyarázatot, hogy miért vártak a csapatok, és miért volt fontos a kulcsok megszerzése. A rendőrök helyi idő szerint 11:44-kor először érkeztek az iskolához, és végül helyi idő szerint 12:50-kor lépett be egy taktikai csapat a terembe, és végzett a fegyveressel.
A fegyveres előre jelezte a tettét: először arra panaszkodott, hogy a nagymamája „idegesítő“, majd a következő üzenetben már azt írta, hogy „épp most lőttem fejbe a nagymamámat”.
Néhány perccel később azonban jött az utolsó és egyben legaggasztóbb üzenet: „megyek és szétlövök most egy általános iskolát”.
