 Az egyik újságíró – akit egyelőre tisztázatlan okokból vettek őrizetbe – Andrew North, brit állampolgár, korábban a BBC riportere volt. A lakóhelyüket elhagyni kényszerültek ügyével foglalkozott, amikor elfogták. A vele dolgozó két afgán állampolgár a sofőrje és a tolmácsa volt. A másik fogvatartott Peter Jouvenal, ő korábban újságíróként dolgozott, emellett sok éve a kabuli Gandamack Lodge vendégház tulajdonosa. Kettejük őrizetbe vétele között nincs összefüggés. A fogvatartásukról először Amrulleh Saleh, Afganisztán korábbi alelnöke posztolt a Twitteren. Azt írta, hogy a tálibok kilenc nyugati állampolgárt tartanak fogva, köztük az említett két személyt.

 A tálibok egyelőre nem kommentálták az esetet. A nyugati állampolgárok fogvatartása megnehezítheti a tálibok azon próbálkozásait, hogy legitimálják hatalmukat azokkal az országokkal, amelyek az afgán kormány összeomlása óta komoly gazdasági szankciókat vezettek be velük szemben.
