A tragédia Oroszország észak-keleti Magadan régiójában történt és halálos áldozatot is követelt.
A hivatalos közlések szerint az orosz gyártmányú Mi-8-as helikopter tizenhét utassal és három fős személyzettel járt szerencsétlenül. A pilóták alig 13 km-nyi repülést követően vészhelyzetet jelentettek – számolt be a helyi, Magadanszkaja Pravda értesülései alapján az RBC-Ukarine internetes kiadvány.
A portál szerint a helikopter valószínűleg erős hóviharba kerülhetett és ez okozhatta a hajtóművek leállását. Úgy tudni, hogy a gép egy aranybányához vitt munkásokat és Evenszk városától mintegy 75 km-re járt szerencsétlenül. Az orosz Rendkívüli Helyzetek Minisztériuma azt közölte, hogy a Mi-8-as „keményen ért földet”.
A Telegrammon megjelent értesülések szerint legalább egy ember meghalt a landoláskor és többen súlyosan megsérültek. Az Interfax orosz hírügynökség viszont úgy értesült, hogy ketten vesztették életüket.
Magadan Régió kormányzója, Szergej Noszov arról számolt be, hogy a katasztrófa helyszínére mentőcsapatok érkeztek és megkezdték a sérültek elszállítását. Moszkvai közlés szerint a mentést három helikopter is segíti.

Előre megfontolt emberölés gyanújával vizsgálják az orosz katonai nyomozók az Örményország felett november 9-én lelőtt orosz helikopter ügyét, ami sokkal súlyosabb vád, mint a korábbi „halált okozó hanyagság” – jelentette az Interfax orosz hírügynökség, egy nevének elhallgatását kérő illetékesre hivatkozva.
Az orosz légierő Mi-24 típusú helikopterét Örményország felett az azeri határ közelében lőtték le.
A legénység két tagja meghalt, egy harmadik pedig megsebesült. Az incidens néhány órával a Moszkva közvetítésével aláírt hegyi-karabahi békeszerződés elfogadása előtt történt.
A Törökország politikai támogatását bíró Azerbajdzsán és a hegyi-karabahi örmények közötti heves harcok hat héten át folytatódtak.
Az azeri külügyminiszter szerint az azeri hadsereg tévedésből lőtte le a helikoptert, Baku bocsánatot kért Moszkvától és jelezte, hogy kész kártérítést fizetni.
Az emberölésre vonatkozó vád, amelynek alapján életfogytiglani börtönbüntetéssel sújthatják a felelősnek tartott személyeket, nehezítheti az Oroszország és Azerbajdzsán közötti viszonyt.
