Másfél évvel az úgynevezett Ibiza-videó nyilvánosságra hozatala után – amely az akkori osztrák kormánykoalíció bukásához vezetett – letartóztatták azt az osztrák férfit, aki a gyanú szerint háttérből szervezte, illetve irányította eseményeket. A letartóztatásról először az osztrák Kronen-Zeitung és Die Presse napilapok adtak hírt pénteken.
A rejtett kamerával készült felvételek még 2017-ben készültek. A szabadságpárti politikus, későbbi alkancellár azokon kétes pártadományokról beszélt, és a videó végül az ő pártvezetői és az akkori, a néppárti Sebastian Kurz vezette osztrák koalíciós kormány bukásához és később új választásokhoz vezetett.
A férfit, aki az eseményeket a háttérből irányította, csütörtökön fogták el Berlinben. Az őrizetbe vétel tényét a bécsi államügyészség és a berlini rendőrség is megerősítette. Az osztrák hatóságok már kérelmezték Julian H. kiadatását, és várnak a berlini döntésre.
A 2017-ben Ibizán felvett, a német Der Spiegel és Süddeutsche Zeitung által 2019-ben nyilvánosságra hozott videón Strache egy állítólagos orosz oligarcha unokahúgával tárgyalt meglehetősen ittas állapotban kétes pártfinanszírozásról, és az ennek fejében elnyerhető állami megbízásokról.
A magánnyomozóként is emlegetett Julian H tolmácsként maga is feltűnik az ominózus videón.
Ellene európai letartóztatási parancs volt érvényben, és más bűncselekmények elkövetésével, a többi között kábítószer-kereskedelemmel is vádolták.
A volt alkancellár mindig is vitatta a korrupciós vádakat.
