Joseph Tondop területi rendőrparancsnok tájékoztatása szerint a helyzet rendezésére tett közvetítési kísérletek kudarcot vallottak, és a konfliktus heves törzsi harcokká fajult, csak vasárnap mintegy 300 lövést adtak le. A rivális klánok harminc férfit megöltek, több száz nőnek és gyermeknek el kellett hagynia otthonát, és sok ház porig égett. Több mint 2000 embert temetett maga alá egy hatalmas földcsuszamlás Pápua Új-Guinea északi részén – közölte az ország katasztrófavédelmi hivatala.
A heves esőzések okozta földcsuszamlások Pápua Új-Guineában pénteken hajnalban mintegy 2000 embert és több mint ezer házat temetett maga alá. A Sky News szerint Pápua Új-Guinea nemzetközi segítséget kért.
Az érintett területről körülbelül 4000 embert telepítettek ki, azonban a helyi hatóságok szerint a földcsuszamlás helyszínének közelében élő közel 7900 ember is továbbra is veszélyben van, mivel a sziklák és törmelékek még mindig mozgásban vannak.
Lehetséges evakuálás miatt riasztás van érvényben az érintett tartományban. A mentők szerint egyre kisebb a valószínűsége, hogy az áldozatokat élve találják meg a romok alatt.

A tartomány kormányzója, Allan Bird közölte, hogy „mintegy ezer ház semmisült meg”. Hozzátette, a katasztrófavédelmi szolgálatok egyelőre még csupán a rengések következményeinek felmérésénél tartanak; a rengések a tartományban szinte mindenütt „károkat okoztak”.
A Sepik folyó partján fekvő falvak tucatjait már a vasárnap kora reggeli földrengés idején jelentős áradások sújtották. A rengés után készült fotókon a térdig érő vízbe roskadó faházak látszottak.
Pápua Új-Guineában gyakoriak a földrengések, amely a Tűzgyűrűn, a Délkelet-Ázsiától a Csendes-óceánig húzódó, intenzív tektonikus aktivitású övezetben fekszik. Mathew Moihoi, Port Moresby geofizikai intézetének igazgatóhelyettese azt mondta, több épület megrongálódott, a katasztrófavédelem egyelőre nem tud áldozatokról, a vizsgálat folyik. A rengés epicentrumát az ország nehezen megközelíthető térségében mérték, így a munkálatok akár napokig eltarthatnak – tette hozzá.
A Hawaiin működő amerikai cunami-előrejelző központ azt közölte, nem áll fenn szökőár veszélye. A földrengést a Chambri-tónál észlelték hajnalban, az amerikai földtani intézet (USGS) mérései szerint 62 kilométeres mélységben.

Az értesülések szerint a földrengés miatt legalább öt ember halt meg. Kessy Sawang parlamenti képviselő szerint a rengés következtében a hegyvidéki falvakban legalább két halott volt, négy másik ember súlyos sérüléseket szenvedett, őket légi úton kórházba szállították. A Koranga bányászati vállalat tájékoztatása szerint három vájárt élve betemetett a földrengés. James Marape kormányfő masszív földmozgásról beszélt, és óvatosságra intette az embereket. Hozzátette, hogy a károk pontos mértéke még nem ismert, de abból indulnak ki, hogy a 2018-as, 150 ember életét követelő rengéshez képest alacsonyabbak lesznek.Az amerikai földtani intézet (USGS) mérése szerint a rengés középpontja körülbelül 60 kilométeres mélységben volt, nem egészen 70 kilométerre az ország keleti részén fekvő Kainantu várostól.
Helyszíni beszámolók szerint a tengerparti Madangban több épületben károk keletkeztek, fennakadások voltak az áramellátásban is. A rengést még a csaknem 500 kilométerre lévő fővárosban, Port Moresbyban is érezni lehetett. Az USGS a rengést követően szökőárveszélyre figyelmeztetett, de a riasztást rövid időn belül visszavonta.
Földrengést jelentettek vasárnap az indonéziai Szumátra szigetének nyugati részéről is, egyelőre nem tudni, a 6,1-es rengésnek vannak-e áldozatai, a hatóságok nem rendeltek el szökőárriadót. Pápua Új-Guinea és Indonézia az úgynevezett csendes-óceáni tűzgyűrűn fekszik, ahol különösen gyakoriak a földrengések.
