A fegyveresek túszul ejtettek hívőket. A rendőrség mintegy negyven embert őrizetbe vett.
Öt embert megöltek szombaton egy pünkösdi templom területén a dél-afrikai Johannesburg egyik elővárosában – közölték a helyi hatóságok.
A Gauteng tartományi rendőrség tájékoztatása szerint a fegyveresek túszul ejtettek hívőket, és vérfürdőt rendeztek Zurbekom pünkösdi templomában. A helyszínre érkező rendőrök négy holttestet találtak egy kocsiban a templom területén: az áldozatokra tüzet nyitottak, majd rájuk gyújtották az autót.
Egy másik autóban egy biztonsági őr holttestére bukkantak. A lövöldözésben hat ember megsebesült.
Több órán át tartó tárgyalások után a rendőrség meggyőzte a túszejtőket, hogy engedjék szabadon a templomban fogságba ejtett embereket.
A rendőrség mintegy negyven embert őrizetbe vett, és ugyanannyi lőfegyvert foglalt le náluk. A letartóztatottak között rendőrök, katonák is vannak. A helyi média által bemutatott felvételeken tucatnyi, földön fekvő ember látható, puskákkal, pisztolyokkal baseball-ütőkkel voltak felfegyverkezve.
A rendőrség azt feltételezi, hogy a vérengzés hátterében felekezeti belviszály áll. A helyi sajtó szerint a Nemzetközi Pünkösdi Szentségtemplom (IPHC) nevű egyház Szent Szűz temploma az elmúlt években többször heves viták helyszíne volt, lövöldözések, kődobálások és kocsirongálások is történtek ott azóta, hogy 2016 februárjában meghalt Glayton Modise, a felekezet vezetője. Utána harc bontakozott ki a templom birtoklásáért, illetve a felekezet vezetéséért az egymással rivalizáló két felekezeti csoport között.
Az IPHC Dél-Afrikai egyik legnagyobb, és hírek szerint leggazdagabb keresztény egyháza, amelyet 1962-ben alapította Frederic Modise. Mintegy hárommillió híve van az országban.
