A helyi média beszámolói alapján eltűnt 120, a RAI olasz közmédia tulajdonában lévő műalkotás a műsorszolgáltató irodáiból szerte az országban, a feltételezések szerint pedig az alkalmazottak lophatták el őket.
Az ellopott alkotások között olyan művek szerepelnek, mint Amadeo Modigliano Petit fils, Camille Corot La Route de Sevre, Claude Monet Paysage de Verneuil vagy Giorgio de Chirico Vita nei campi című festménye – utóbbit még 2004-ben látták a RAI római székházának falán.
Nyomtalanul eltűnt továbbá a közmédia szimbólumának számító, az 1960-as évek óta a RAI székházának bejárata előtt álló lószobornak – a szicíliai Francesco Messina alkotásának – egy másolata is.
Az ellopott műveket néhol értéktelen másolatokkal helyettesítették, az előzetes becslések szerint pedig a kár akár tízmillió eurós nagyságrendű is lehet. Az olasz közmédia mintegy 1500 darabból – festményből, szoborból, faliszőnyegből – álló, 100 millió euró értékű műgyűjteménnyel rendelkezik, 1996-ban pedig kiállítást rendeztek a mesés festményekből a dél-olaszországi Leccében.
Az évtizedek alatt elkövetett lopásokra akkor derült fény, amikor valakinek feltűnt, hogy Ottone Rosai firenzei expresszionista festő Architettura című képét egy másolattal pótolták. Az eredetit még az 1970-es években lopta el egy alkalmazott, aki aztán eladta azt, s bár a tolvaj kiléte ismert, a bűncselekmény már elévült.
A római ügyészség és a csendőrség műkincsvédelmi részlege jelenleg is vizsgálatot folytat az évtizedekre visszanyúló rejtélyes műkincs eltűnések ügyében, melyeket a RAI olasz közmédia előfizetési díjakból vásárolt meg.
