Az 1234 méter magas La Soufriére-ből, amely a fő sziget, Saint Vincent északi részén található, tíz kilométer magas füstoszlop szállt fel. A katasztrófavédelmi hatóság hamuesőre figyelmeztetett a térségben.
A vulkán belsejében korábban rázkódásokat mértek, amelyek arra utalnak, hogy láva tör a felszín felé.
A Saint Vincent és a Grenadine-szigetek katasztrófavédelmi hatósága már csütörtökön megkezdte az úgynevezett vörös zóna, vagyis a vulkán közvetlen közelében lévő területek mintegy 16 ezer lakosának az evakuálását.
A koronavírus-járvány hátráltathatja az evakuálást, ugyanis csak immunizált embereket engednek fel hajókra és ezzel más szigetekre, elejét véve a járvány terjedésének.
Az évtizedekig szunnyadó tűzhányó tavaly decemberben kezdett el hamut szórni.
A szigetcsoportnak mintegy százezer lakosa van. Vulkanikus aktivitást legutóbb 1979-ben jegyeztek fel.
A La Soufriere 1902-ben történt kitörésekor több mint ezren haltak meg.
