Szörnyű tragédia áldozata lett a 33 éves Suman Mokhtarian. A korábbi UFC-harcosra Sydney-ben az utcán rálőttek, a helyszínre érkező mentősök pedig már nem tudták megmenteni az életét.
A 33 éves UFC-harcos éppen az ausztrál metropoliszban sétált az esti órákban, amikor fegyveresek támadtak rá az utcán.
Brit sajtóhírek szerint az ausztrál bunyóst Sydney külvárosában, Riverstone-ban, helyi idő szerint szerda este 18 órakor lőtték mellkason. A mentősök minden erőfeszítése ellenére Mokhtarian a helyszínen belehalt sérüléseibe. A halálos baleset után Jason Joyce, a Riverstone-i rendőrség területi parancsnoka így nyilatkozott: „Úgy véljük, hogy sétálni ment, de ezt még nem tudjuk megerősíteni.

Irán annak ellenére végrehajtotta a halálos ítéletet a birkózó ellen, hogy jogvédők mellett egy sportolókat tömörítő nemzetközi szervezet, a Játékosok Világszövetsége (WPA) is ellenezte a sportoló kivégzését. Navid Afkari birkózót azért ítélték halálra, mert a vád szerint 2018-ban egy kormányellenes tüntetésen megölt egy biztonsági őrt. A sportoló a bíróságon állította, hogy kínzással kényszerítették ki belőle beismerő vallomását.
A nemzetközi közvélemény, különösen az érdekvédő és sportszervezetek élénken tiltakoztak a 27 éves kötöttfogású birkózó kivégzése ellen. Öt nappal ezelőtt a WPA figyelmeztette Iránt, hogy kezdeményezni fogja az ország kizárását a világ sportéletéből, ha végrehajtják a halálos ítéletet.
A halálbüntetés ellen küzdő jogvédő aktivisták minden esetben arra hívják fel a figyelmet, hogy a kivégzés végrehajtása után már nem lehet korrigálni, ha a bíróság tévedett, és a nemzetközi kriminalisztika számos esetet tart nyilván, amikor ártatlan embereket végeztek ki úgy, hogy csak később derült ki, hogy az illető nem követett el bűncselekményt, vagy más volt a tettes.
A sportoló ügyvédje szerint nincs bizonyíték védence bűnösségére, az iráni igazságszolgáltatási szervek szerint viszont egyértelmű az ügy.
Afkari esete nagy nemzetközi visszhangot váltott ki, többek között Donald Trump amerikai elnök is az ítélet megváltoztatására szólította fel Iránt, ahogy a brit és a német kormány is.
A Nemzetközi Birkózószövetség és számos elismert birkózó is tiltakozott a kivégzés ellen.
A Nemzetközi Olimpiai Bizottság (IOC) „nagyon szomorú hírnek” nevezte a halálos ítélet végrehajtását, és közleményben tudatta, hogy a szervezet együtt érez a családtagokkal és a barátokkal.
