Az iráni hírszerzési minisztérium bejelentette, hogy kémkedés vádjával letartóztatott egy svéd állampolgárt – írja a Reuters az IRNA iráni állami hírszolgálatra hivatkozva. A svéd külügyminisztérium annyit reagált, hogy ismeretében van a helyzetnek, dolgoznak rajta már egy ideje.
Lehetséges, hogy arról a svéd férfiről van szó, akit májusban tartóztattak le – arról az esetről Irán nem számolt be, a svéd külügyminisztérium azonban igen.
Az iráni minisztérium beszámolója szerint a gyanúsítottat már több iráni útja során megfigyelés alatt tartották, gyanús viselkedése és kapcsolatai miatt, illetve mert olyan városokba látogatott el, amelyek nem számítanak hagyományos turista célpontoknak. Ráadásul állítólag rendszeresen megfordult izraeli megszállás alatt álló palesztin területeken, mielőtt Iránba utazott.
A Svédország és Irán közti kapcsolat eléggé feszült, miután a svédek letartóztattak és bíróság elé állítottak egy korábbi iráni tisztségviselőt háborús bűnök vádjával. Egész pontosan azzal vádolták meg, hogy az 1980-as években részt vett politikai foglyok megkínzásában és tömeges kivégzésében egy iráni börtönben. A férfit júliusban a svéd bíróság életfogytiglani börtönre ítélte. Irán elítélte az ítéletet, azt politikailag motiváltnak és jogi alapot nélkülözőnek nevezve.
