A helyi Katasztrófavédelmi Műveleti Központ tájékoztatása szerint egyelőre nem tudni, ki áll a támadás mögött, és az indíték is ismeretlen.

Gerardo Florián Gómez, a Trujillo Egészségügyi Hálózat ügyvezető igazgatója azt mondta, hogy a sérültek közül legalább öten súlyos állapotban vannak. Többen amputációt és repeszek okozta sérüléseket szenvedtek, ezért műtéten estek át.

A hatóságok egyelőre nem tudták megállapítani a támadók indítékát, azonban a helyszíni bizonyítékok alapján egy csoport lehet felelős a történtekért.
A jelentések szerint szombaton késő este tömeges lövöldözés történt egy dél-afrikai bárban, Soweto városában, amelynek következtében 15-en életüket vesztették, 9-en megsebesültek, hárman pedig súlyos sérülésekkel kerültek kórházba.

A fegyveres bűncselekmények gyakorinak számítanak Dél-Afrikában, ahol a becslések szerint évente 20 ezer gyilkosság történik, a szombati lövöldözés pedig nem sokkal azután történt, hogy 21 fiatal rejtélyes körülmények között életét vesztette egy szórakozóhelyen.

A tudósítás szerint a rendőrségre éjjel 23:00 óra körül érkezett a bejelentés, hogy egy autós konfliktust provokált egy szórakozóhely közelében, majd pisztolyából több lövést adott le. A helyszínt Audi típusú személygépkocsival hagyta el.
A rendőrök a bejelentés után azonnal a keresésére indultak. A leírás alapján gyorsan megtalálták az Audit a Tlehasz utcai parkolóban. Az egyenruhások autójukkal blokkolták a járművet. A sofőrt megbilincselték, ruházatának átvizsgálása során pisztolyt és töltényeket találtak nála. A rendőrök az elfogás során észlelték, hogy a férfi ittas, de nem engedte magát megszondáztatni.
Hatalmas erőkkel vonult a rendőrség egy szórakozóhelyhez vasárnap hajnalban London Tottenham nevű negyedében. Egy 21 éves férfi meghalt, többen pedig rosszul lettek, miután drogot vásároltak a helyen.
