Hongkongban őrizetbe vették pénteken az 1989-es Tienanmen téri események évfordulója alkalmából évente megrendezett, gyertyafényes megemlékezés egyik szervezőjét – adta hírül bennfentes forrásra hivatkozva internetes kiadásában a South China Morning Post (SCMP) című hongkongi lap.
Chow Hang-tungot, aki a Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China (Hongkongi szövetség Kína hazafias demokratikus mozgalmainak támogatására) nevű szervezet elnökhelyettese, azzal a gyanúval állították elő, hogy népszerűsíti a nem engedélyezett megemlékezést.
A Hongkongban korábban minden június 4-én megrendezett esemény megtartására a rendőrség idén második alkalommal nem adott engedélyt, a koronavírus-járvány miatti óvintézkedésekre hivatkozva. A megemlékezést hagyományosan szervező szövetség mindazonáltal arra szólította fel a hongkongiakat, hogy emlékezzenek meg a maguk módján a június 4-i évfordulóról „törvényes, biztonságos, békés és ésszerű módon, hogy az igazság ne tűnjön el”. A szervezők ugyanakkor lemondtak a megemlékezés virtuális megtartásáról is, amiatti aggodalmukban, hogy azzal megsértenék a pekingi kormányzat által kidolgozott, tavaly júniusban érvénybe lépett nemzetbiztonsági törvényt.
Gyertyát gyújt
Szerdán ideiglenesen bezárt továbbá a városban működő, a Tienanmen téri eseményeknek szentelt múzeum, miután a helyi hatóságok vizsgálatot indítottak egy, a működési engedélyével kapcsolatos panasz kapcsán. A múzeum üzemeltetője szintén a gyertyafényes megemlékezést szervező szövetség.
Chow a Facebook oldalán szombaton közzétett bejegyzésben azt írta, hogy június 4-én este gyertyát fog gyújtani egy olyan helyen, ahol azt mindenki láthatja.

A pekingi keményvonalas kommunista vezetés utasítására a kínai hadsereg 1989. június 4-én nekilátott a Peking központjában található Tienanmen tér kiürítésének, miután azt április óta elfoglalták a demokratikus változásokat követelő tüntetők. Az erőszakos művelet halálos áldozatainak száma máig ismeretlen, mivel a történtek Kínában azóta is tabunak számítanak. A becslések néhány száz és háromezer közé teszik a meggyilkolt emberek számát, de az akkor Pekingben állomásozó brit nagykövet 2017-ben előkerült titkos távirata szerint tízezer halottja volt a vérengzésnek. Kínában az eseményekkel kapcsolatos megemlékezéseket és megnyilvánulásokat szigorúan tiltják.
