Az Amerikai Egyesült Államok beli Betegségellenőrzési és Megelőzési Központ (CDC) előzetes becslései szerint évente több mint fél millió ember betegedhet meg az USA-ban a coccidioides gomba okozta völgylázban – számolt be az Index.
A hatóságok és a tudományos társaságok által nyilvánosságra hozott előzetes adatok szerint a gombás megbetegedés halálos áldozatainak száma a háromszorosa lehet a korábbi becsléseknek.
Egyszerűen nincs elég ismeretünk a betegségről. Sok utazással összefüggő esetet látunk, de olyan helyeken is történtek megbetegedések, ahol nem jellemző a völgyláz – mondta a CBS News-nak Samantha Williams, a CDC járványügyi szakértője, aki annak a csapatnak a tagja, aki a völgylázzal összefüggő előrejelzéseket pontosította. A projekt célja, hogy az ügynökség fokozza a betegségre adott válaszlépéseket az érintett területeken, elsősorban délnyugaton, Kaliforniától Texas középső részéig.
A CDC-nek csak az esetek töredékét jelentik, de ezek az adatok is folyamatosan emelkednek. 2021-ben 20 197 esetet regisztráltak, ami a 2011-es rekord óta a legtöbb egyetlen év alatt jegyzett megbetegedés.
„Ha összehasonlítjuk a mostani és a 2021-es számokat a 2014-es adatokkal, akkor drasztikus emelkedésről beszélhetünk. Arizonában gyakorlatilag megduplázódott, Kaliforniában pedig több mint megháromszorozódott a regisztrált esetek száma” – mondta Williams.
A betegség tünetei
A völgyláz tünetmentes esetei gyakran enyhén kezdődnek, az influenzához vagy a koronavírushoz hasonló tünetekkel, például lázzal, köhögéssel és kiütéssel. Az emberek fejfájást, fáradtságot, éjszakai izzadást és izom- vagy ízületi fájdalmat is tapasztalhatnak.
A tünetek jellemzően pár héttel a gomba spóráinak belélegzése után alakulnak ki – a gomba a nyugati államok talajában fordul elő, főleg délnyugaton.
Sokan maguktól meggyógyulnak, de az esetek tíz százalékában veszélyes szövődmények alakulhatnak ki. Enyhe megbetegedés esetén is hetekig elhúzódik a rosszullét.
Az utóbbi években egyre könnyebben diagnosztizálják a völgylázat, de van, hogy hetekbe telik az orvosoknak, mire rájönnek, mi okozza a problémát. „A korai felismerés és a korai kezelés nagyon fontos” – tette hozzá Williams.
A betegséget nagyon nehéz elkerülni, mert a spórák a levegőben terjednek. Kaliforniában arra kérik a lakosságot, hogy mérsékeljék az ásás által felkavart port, és minimalizálják a szabadban töltött időt a szeles napokon.
A betegség kezelése még nehézkes, a protokoll más gombák ellen jóváhagyott gyógyszerekre támaszkodik. Nincs vakcina, hiányoznak a hatékony terápiák. Jelenleg tesztelik a potenciális oltásokat, és különböző támogatásokat ítéltek meg a kutatóknak, hogy ösztönözzék a völgyláz elleni terápiák kidolgozását.
