A hét elején kirobbant zavargások miatt evakuálták a bagdadi holland nagykövetség személyzetét, az alkalmazottak biztonságuk érdekében ideiglenesen a város másik részén lévő német nagykövetségen dolgoznak és tartózkodnak – írta az NlTimes című hírportál kedden a külügyminisztérium bejelentésére hivatkozva.
A bagdadi holland nagykövetség a Zöld Zónában helyezkedik el, a terület körül tűzharcok zajlanak, míg a német nagykövetség a térségen kívül található. „Amint a helyzet újra biztonságos lesz, az alkalmazottak visszatérnek a holland nagykövetségre” – közölte a minisztérium.
A holland külügyminisztérium felszólította az állampolgárokat Irak elhagyására. „Komoly a biztonsági kockázat, ne halogassák a távozást” – hangsúlyozta a külügyminisztérium. Azt is hozzátették, hogy amennyiben a biztonsági helyzet romlik, a nagykövetség valószínűleg nem tud majd segíteni azoknak a hollandoknak, akik úgy döntenek, hogy Irakban maradnak.
Hétfőn óta több mint húszan meghaltak Bagdadban, amikor rohamrendőrökkel csaptak össze az aznap lemondott Muktada asz-Szadr síita hitszónok és politikai vezető támogatói. Az erőszak az után robbant ki, hogy Szadr bejelentette visszavonulását. Hívei – akik a múlt hónapban már megrohamozták a parlamentet, majd többhetes ülősztrájkot tartottak az épületnél – erre reagálva hétfőn több kormányépületet is megostromoltak a fővárosban, és nem csak a rendőrökkel, de az Irán által támogatott politikai csoportokkal is összecsaptak a bagdadi kormányzati negyedben. Keddi jelentések szerint a Zöld Zónában iraki fegyveresek által kilőtt rakéták csapódtak be, és folytatódnak az összecsapások a rivális síita csoportok között.
