 Жодного з викинутих дельфінів не вдалося врятувати, і всі вони або загинули природним шляхом, або зазнали евтаназії, − заявив інформаційному агентству AP Дарен Гровер, генеральний директор некомерційної організації Project Jonah, яка допомагає рятувати китів.
 Дельфінів викинуло на берег на островах Чатем, де проживає близько 600 людей, приблизно за 800 кілометрів (500 миль) на схід від головних островів Нової Зеландії.
 За даними Міністерства навколишнього середовища, 232 дельфіни викинулися на берег біля пляжу Тупуангі в п’ятницю, а ще 245 – у затоці Вейхер у понеділок. Цей інцидент стався через два тижні після того, як близько 200 гринд загинули в Австралії. А саме після того, як їх викинуло на берег на віддаленому пляжі Тасманії.
 
 „Хоча це природні явища, вони все одно сумні та важкі для помічників”, – констатували в Міністерстві навколишнього середовища.
 Гровер розповів, що через віддалене розташування та присутність акул вони не змогли мобілізувати волонтерів, щоб повернути дельфінів у воду, як це робили в минулому.
 „На островах Чатем через ризик нападу акул як на людей, так і на дельфінів ми не можемо рятувати тварин, тому в нас не було іншого вибору, як усипити їх”, − каже Дейв Лундквіст, морський радник департаменту.
