Вогонь знищив близько двох тисяч будинків у таборі Кокс-Базар. Там проживало близько 12 тисяч людей, більшість з яких покинули М’янму через військові репресії.
Причина пожежі наразі невідома, повідомлень про потерпілих не надходило.
Пожежа спалахнула приблизно о 14:45 за місцевим часом і швидко поширилася, адже будинки зроблені з бамбука та брезенту.
«Згоріли приблизно дві тисячі будинків, без даху над головою залишилися близько 12 тисяч вимушених переселенців, громадян М’янми», – повідомив агентству AFP уповноважений у справах біженців Бангладеш Міджанур Рахман.
За його словами, полум’я вдалося приборкати за три години, але згоріли щонайменше 35 мечетей та 21 навчальний центр, призначені для біженців.

Місцеві метеорологічні служби попереджають, що цей циклон може стати найпотужнішим для регіону з 2007 року, коли циклон „Сидр” забрав життя понад 3 тис. осіб.
Зараз циклон „амфа” знаходиться в Бенгальській затоці, а максимальна швидкість поривів вітру досягає 265 км/год. Очікується, що негода накотиться на Індію та Бангладеш у середу. Циклон принесе проливні дощі і вітер швидкістю 165 км/год.
„Це може бути найпотужнішим циклоном, який траплявся в регіоні після Сидра”, – заявив Базлур Расід, один із керівників Метеорологічного інституту в Бангладеші, посилаючись на циклон листопада 2007 року, внаслідок якого загинуло понад 3 000 людей. Із вівторка з низьких районів Бангладешу та Індії можуть бути евакуйовані до двох мільйонів людей, – повідомив Сах Камал, речник національного управління МНС Індії. У понеділок уже відбулися тисячі евакуацій.
Влада Бангладешу готує рекордну кількість – 42 тис. сховищ для розміщення до 5,19 мільйона евакуйованих людей, якщо у цьому буде необхідність, та у зв’язку з епідемією намагатимуться дотриматися фізичної відстані у цих сховищах. У притулках евакуйовані жителі будуть зобов’язані носити захисні маски та, за можливості, рукавички.
До вівторка в Індії буде евакуйовано понад 200 тис. людей із розташованих у низині районів Західного Бенгалії, – заявив Мантурам Факіра, один із міністрів штату.
У сусідньому штаті Орісса влада підготувала притулки для 1,1 мільйона людей, але розраховують, що основне русло циклону не торкнеться їхнього регіону, і для евакуації знадобиться усього лише 10 відсотків цих притулків.
Хоча сила циклонів у цій місцевості істотно зросла, що частково пов’язано з глобальним потеплінням, кількість людських жертв за останні роки зменшилась – через швидку та добре організовану стратегію евакуації та переселення людей в укриття, побудовані на випадок вітряних штормів.
