Вказується, що понад 1400 пожежників з усього штату були спрямовані на боротьбу з вогнем, проте станом на день середи локалізувати займання не вдалося.
Місцеві чиновники підтвердили, що через пожежі вісім осіб зазнали травм, принаймні половина з них – рятувальники.

На півдні Каліфорнії 13-річну дівчину звільнили з припаркованої машини викрадача після того, як перехожі помітили аркуш паперу, за допомогою якого вона намагалася покликати на допомогу. Злочинця заарештували та висунули йому звинувачення, повідомляє Guardian.
За даними місцевої поліції, інцидент стався 9 липня на парковці в Лонг-Біч неподалік від Лос-Анджелеса. Перехожі сповістили поліцію, що в одній із припаркованих машин знаходиться дівчина, яка тримає папірець з написом «Допоможіть!» На місце події прибули правоохоронці й одразу визволили потерпілу.
З’ясувалося, що 6 липня дівчину з автобусної зупинки в Сан-Антоніо, штат Техас, викрав 61-річний Стівен-Роберт Саблан. Погрожуючи зброєю, він силою посадив її в машину. У ході розслідування виявилося, що на шляху до Каліфорнії чоловік вчинив сексуальне насильство над дівчиною. У його машині знайшли муляж пістолета, яким він погрожував жертві.
Як повідомляє ABC7, Саблан зупинився в Лонг-Біч, бо зголоднів. Дівчина, яка залишалася в машині, мала можливість підготувати повідомлення з проханням про допомогу, бо чоловік спочатку пішов до пральні, аби дізнатися, де можна купити їжу. Жінка, яка там працювала, відчула, що щось не так, і сказала Саблану почекати годину, хоча знала, що найближчі ресторани в неділю не працюють.
У четвер злочинцю було висунуто звинувачення у викраденні на сексуальному ґрунті.

Щонайменше 19 людей загинули в цих штормах, які почалися наприкінці грудня. П’ятирічний хлопчик досі вважається зниклим безвісти. Мама та син потрапили в пастку, коли їхали до школи.

За даними місцевих ЗМІ, жертвами стихії вже стали щонайменше двоє людей: дворічна дитина загинула, коли дерево впало на будинок, а молода жінка на затопленій дорозі не впоралася з керуванням і врізалася в електричний стовп.
Губернатор Каліфорнії Гевін Ньюсом оголосив надзвичайний стан і перевів рятувальні підрозділи штату в стан найвищої готовності. Метеорологи попередили про найсерйозніший шторм за останні роки.
У деяких регіонах на півдні Каліфорнії оголосили обов’язкову евакуацію через ризик повені внаслідок сильних дощів та сходження селевих потоків і зсувів, подібних до тих, що були у 2018 році. Тоді загинули 23 людини.

Приблизно третина річної потреби штату Каліфорнія у воді забезпечується снігом, який узимку випадає в горах.
