На півдні Бразилії сталася найпотужніша повінь за останні 80 років. Жертвами стихії у штаті Ріу-Гранді-ду-Сул стали щонайменше 57 людей, ще 67 вважаються зниклими безвісти.

Шторми вразили майже дві третини з 497 міст штату, який межує з Уругваєм і Аргентиною. Через стихію понад 32 тисячі людей були змушені покинути свої домівки.
Губернатор штату Едуардо Лейте попередив, що кількість загиблих і постраждалих може зрости, оскільки доступ удалося дістати не до всіх територій, які постраждали через негоду.
Також відомо, що увечері в п’ятницю, 3 травня, у місті Порту-Алегрі – столиці штату – прорвало один із шлюзів озера Патус, під загрозою затоплення опинилися північні райони міста. Мер міста Себастьян Мелу закликав населення нормувати воду, попередивши, що із шести водоочисних споруд працює лише дві.
Крім того, із місцевої в’язниці довелося евакуювати понад 1 тисячу ув’язнених. Також повідомляється, що міжнародний аеропорт у місті призупинив усі рейси на невизначений період.
У найближчу добу очікуються дощі в північних і північно-східних регіонах штату, але кількість опадів зменшується.
Як повідомляє Бразильська геологічна служба, ця повінь – найсильніша за понад 80 років. Рівень води в деяких містах був найвищим за весь час спостережень (понад 150 років). Від стихії вже постраждали 350 тисяч осіб, затоплено понад 260 муніципалітетів.

Зазначається, що станом на 4 травня внаслідок дощів загинули 39 людей, ще 68 вважаються зниклими безвісти.
За даними цивільної оборони штату Ріу-Гранді-ду-Сул, щонайменше 17 тисяч були евакуйовані, оскільки постраждала майже половина з 497 міст.
У кількох містах вода повністю перетворила вулиці на річки, а дороги та мости були зруйновані. Негода також спричинила зсуви ґрунту і часткове обвалення дамби на невеликій гідроелектростанції.
За словами влади, друга дамба в місті Бенто-Гонкальвес також знаходиться під загрозою обвалу, і люди, які живуть поблизу, змушені були евакуюватися.
„Це не просто ще одна критична ситуація, це, мабуть, найкритичніший випадок, який коли-небудь був зафіксований у штаті”, – заявив губернатор Ріу-Гранді-ду-Сул Едуардо Лейте, додавши, що кількість загиблих, ймовірно, зростатиме, оскільки рятувальні служби не мають доступу до деяких населених пунктів.

У членів племені яномамі, які живуть ізольовано від світу, діагностували симптоми отруєння ртуттю. Тести показали, що ртуть просочується з території нелегального золоторудника.
Місцеве відомство з питань охорони здоров’я шукало ймовірне джерело витоку ртуті вздовж річки Мукаджаї, де поширений незаконний видобуток. Ртуть використовують для вилучення золота з руди.
В крові 84 відсотків обстежених аборигенів виявили наявність такої кількості ртуті, яка призводить до серйозних проблем зі здоров’ям.
«Копальні – це найбільша загроза, з якою зараз стикається плем’я яномамі. (…) Якщо видобуток продовжуватиметься, забруднення та руйнування навколишнього середовища, поширення малярії та недоїдання стануть ще серйознішими. Дослідження надає цьому конкретні докази», – заявив лідер племені Даріо Копенава.
Президент Бразилії Луїс да Сілва раніше пообіцяв викорінити незаконний видобуток золота на територіях племені. Метилртуть є потужним нейротоксином, що утворюється в результаті біохімічної реакції неорганічної ртуті з мікроорганізмами. Вживання отрути з річки протягом декількох місяців може призвести до важкого ураження нервової системи.
Речовина може потрапляти в матку вагітних жінок і викликати у плода порушення розвитку та дитячий церебральний параліч.
Загальними симптомами отруєння ртуттю є оніміння кінцівок, загальна слабкість, запаморочення та шум у вухах. Пошкодження центральної нервової системи також може викликати проблеми з рухом.
Метилртуть, яка потрапляє в організм із продуктами харчування, зокрема, рибою, концентрується в еритроцитах, а потім накопичується в мозку. Речовина виходить з організму дуже повільно й цей процес може тривати до року.

Бразильська поліція в суботу затримала чоловіка, який намагався автомобілем в’їхати до президентського палацу.
Згідно з інформацією, підозрюваний під’їхав на своєму автомобілі до президентського палацу на світанку в суботу, коли президент Луїс Інасіу Лула да Сілва саме перебував у будівлі, і не зупинився, незважаючи на наказ охорони.
Після того, як автомобіль врізався в металевий стовп, водій втік із місця події пішки і незабаром був знайдений поліцією в одному з будинків, розташованих поруч із президентським палацом.
За даними місцевої преси, підозрюваний не мав наміру вриватися до палацу, він був п’яний і просто заблукав.

Дуже сильний землетрус магнітудою 6,5 стався в неділю, 28 січня, за 67 км від Тарауаки, Акко, Бразилія, рано вранці (о 4:38 за місцевим часом).
