Майк Севідж, мер Галіфаксу, незадовго до півночі оголосив надзвичайний стан, який може бути продовжений у разі необхідності.
У пресрелізі влада Нової Шотландії, південно-східної прибережної провінції, повідомила, що працює цілодобово, щоб стримати полум’я і вивезти людей у безпечне місце.
Пожежі також спричинили вимкнення електроенергії в кількох районах провінції, а над Галіфаксом спостерігався густий чорний дим.
У травні надзвичайний стан також був оголошений у західній канадській провінції Альберта, одному з найбільших нафтовидобувних регіонів світу. Там через пожежі довелося евакуювати десятки тисяч людей.
Кілька тижнів тому Канада вже зверталася по міжнародну допомогу для стримування пожеж у західних провінціях.
Останніми роками ця частина світу неодноразово потерпала від екстремальних погодних явищ, інтенсивність і частота яких, на думку експертів, посилюються через зміну клімату.

Канада відправила сотні військових для боротьби з лісовими пожежами, які вирують на заході Альберти з початку травня , повідомило MTI з посиланням на місцеву владу.
Двісті військовослужбовців минулого четверга почали допомагати пожежникам. Згідно з офіційною заявою, очікується, що незабаром до них приєднається ще сто. Хоча ситуація дещо покращилася, досі вирують 80 пожеж, 23 з них неконтрольовані.
Крім того, мінливі погодні умови найближчими днями можуть сприяти подальшим пожежам.
Прем’єр-міністр Канади Джастін Трюдо у твіттері в четвер заявив, що для допомоги пожежній службі прибудуть військові, які нададуть повітряний транспорт та займуться евакуацією мешканців окремих громад. Прем’єр-міністерка Альберти Даніель Сміт заявила, що солдати можуть знадобитися в будь-якій точці провінції, зокрема будуть задіяні для розчищення завалів.
Альберта є одним із найважливіших нафтовидобувних регіонів світу. Оскільки нещодавно ситуація з лісовими пожежами покращилася, нафтові й газові компанії змогли відновити роботу після кількох днів перебоїв.

Скупчення деревини розміщене в дельті річки Маккензі в Нунавуті, найбільшій і північній території Канади.
У Канаді виявили купу повалених дерев та стародавньої деревини, площею 51 квадратний кілометр. Про це повідомляє IFLScience.
Так, у новому дослідженні експерти з Університету штату Колорадо використали супутникові знімки та штучний інтелект, щоб скласти карту цього величезного родовища деревини.
Загалом його площа майже дорівнює площі Манхеттена (США), але його можна розбити на 400 тисяч мініатюрних скупчень деревини, найбільший з яких займає близько 20 американських футбольних полів.
За словами вчених, дерева діють як поглиначі вуглецю для планети, всмоктуючи вуглекислий газ з атмосфери і зберігаючи його у своїй деревині. Таким чином, вони мають значний вплив на рівень парникових газів в атмосфері та зміну клімату. Однак подібні завали дерев часто ігноруються, коли йдеться про їх вплив на довкілля загалом.
„Існує багато вивчень потоків вуглецю з води та осаду, але ми просто не звертали уваги на деревину до недавнього часу. Це дуже молода галузь досліджень, яка розвивається досить швидко. І важливо вивчати цю деревину не тільки для кругообігу вуглецю зокрема, а й загалом для нашого розуміння того, як працюють ці природні річкові системи, як річки збирають та розподіляють деревину”, – сказала дослідниця з Лозанського університету Вірджинія Руїс-Віллануєва.
Згідно з останніми підрахунками, колоди в дельті річки Маккензі зберігають близько 3,4 мільйона тонн вуглецю, що є значною кількістю навіть у глобальному масштабі.
Зазначається, що деревина накопичилася тут упродовж великого періоду, і на це вплинуло кілька речей.
По-перше, дрейф в Арктиці має звичку переміщатися величезними територіями завдяки широким бореальним лісам і мережі високоширотних річок.
По-друге, дельта річки Маккензі величезна, що дозволяє накопичуватися купам зрубаної деревини.
Остання причина – холодні та часто сухі умови Арктики. Завдяки їм дерева можуть залишатися майже в ідеальному стані протягом десятків тисяч років.
Дослідники наголосили, що деякі дерева виглядають так, ніби впали минулої зими, але насправді їм десятки та сотні років.

В Едмонтоні, адміністративному центрі канадської провінції Альберта, трьом командам пожежників довелося рятувати 26-річного чоловіка, який застряг усередині місцевої пам’ятки — скульптури Talus Dome. Про це у неділю, 16 квітня, пише британський таблоїд Mirror.
Як повідомили очевидці незвичайної події, чоловік підійшов надто близько до скульптури та, намагаючись забратися на неї, прослизнув через отвір у конструкції.
Перехожий помітив, що хтось застряг усередині, і викликав службу порятунку. Три бригади пожежників змушені були використовувати важке рятувальне обладнання, щоб звільнити чоловіка. Пожежникам довелося розкрити конструкцію та витягти одну зі сфер, щоб витягнути його неушкодженим.
„Мені подобаються кулі, я один із небагатьох, хто їх любить, тому я спустився подивитися. Там усередині був хлопець”, — розповів очевидець Ганс Клявер.
За даними ЗМІ, 26-річному чоловікові було висунуто звинувачення у завданні збитків на суму понад $5 000, йому також загрожує ув’язнення.
Купол Талус в Едмонтоні, розташований поряд із мостом Кеснелл, встановили у 2011 році. Він складається з більш ніж 1000 металевих куль ручної роботи, де відображається місцевий рельєф. Арт-об’єкт створили Художники Бенджамін Болл та Гастон Ногес. За їхніми словами, твір імітує купи каміння і „ставиться до співіснування рукотворного та природного”.

Крижаний шторм обрушився на деякі райони міст Онтаріо і Квебека у Канаді. Внаслідок цього понад 1 млн споживачів залишилися без електроенергії.
Про це повідомило канадське видання CBC. Як зазначається, компанія Hydro-Québec направила близько 1100 працівників для відновлення електропостачання. Однак бригади зіткнулися з більш ніж 2200 перебоями в роботі.
При цьому міністр П’єр Фіцгіббон, який відповідальний за район Монреаля, заявив, що 25% із цих відключень були великими і зачіпали понад 1000 осіб. За даними Міністерства охорони довкілля Канади, випало 40 міліметрів опадів, більша частина яких – крижаний дощ, що вкрив гілки дерев, ламає гілки і обрушує їх на лінії електропередач.
Крім того, Hydro Ottawa назвала шторм найсильнішим у цьому районі з 1998 року.
“Учора ми пережили одну з найруйнівніших крижаних бур з 1998 року. Відтоді у нас були крижані бурі, зовсім нещодавно, у 2017-2018 роках, але нічого, і близько не те, що ми бачили вчора”, – йдеться в повідомленні.

Перші два землетруси були зареєстровані о 8:46 ранку. Землетрус силою 4,5 бала, який був зареєстрований за 39 км на північний схід від Ріно, штат Альта, і землетрус силою 4,2 бала в районі Піс-Рівер.
Earthquakes Canada спочатку зафіксували землетрус неподалік крихітного села Ріно як магнітудою 5,0, але пізніше знизили рейтинг.
За даними Earthquakes Canada, о 9:07 у тому ж районі неподалік Ріно стались ще два землетруси магнітудою 4,6.
Тим часом у Доусон-Крік, Британська Колумбія, була зареєстрована подія магнітудою 4,2.
Користувачі соціальних мереж повідомили про те, що відчували поштовхи в різних частинах Альберти.

Троє лижників загинули, ще четверо отримали травми внаслідок сходження лавини поблизу міста Інвермір у провінції Британська Колумбія, повідомила місцева влада.
За даними канадської поліції, загалом лавина знесла десять людей. Четверо постраждалих перебувають у важкому стані, але їхньому життю нічого не загрожує. Один із важкотравмованих – гід. Троє лижників пережили стихію неушкодженими.
Всі лижники, крім гіда, були іноземцями. Водночас інших подробиць про них поліція не повідомила. Лавина зійшла на лижному курорті Panorama Mountain поблизу Інверміра, за 160 кілометрів на захід від Калгарі.
