Újabb nagy horderejű botrány robbant ki az Egyesült Államokban, ami ismét összefügg a rendvédelmi szervek fekete bőrűekkel szembeni indokolatlan erőszakos fellépésével. A rendőrség úgymond szabálysértés miatt állította meg a kerékpáron közlekedő afro-amerikai Dijon Kizzyt, végül a Los Angeles-i seriff két helyettese lelőtte, 15-20 golyót eresztettek bele.
A tragédia egyik tanúja elmondta, hogy a rendőrség még akkor is folytatta a lövöldözését, amikor a 29 éves Kizzy már mozdulatlanul feküdt a földön.
A Reuters szerint a rendőrség azt közölte, hogy „az agyonlőtt férfi megütött egy tisztet, miközben elejtette fegyverét”. A Los Angeles megyei seriff szóvivője, Brandon Dean hadnagy szerint „a félautomata pisztoly nyilvánvalóan akkor esett ki Kizzy zsebéből, amikor arcon ütötte rendőrt”. Dean azt is elmondta, hogy a tisztek akkor nyitottak tüzet, amikor Kizzy „ahhoz hasonló mozdulatot tett, mintha fel akarná emelni lőfegyverét”. „Hogy a lőfegyver valóban a kezében volt-e, nem ismerem ezeket a részleteket, mert még nem hallgattuk ki az ott tartózkodó seriffeket” – mondta Dean hadnagy.
A meggyilkolt szomszédja elmondta saját verzióját. Elmondása szerint Kizzy és az egyik tiszt „egy ruhás csomag miatt verekedtek össze, mielőtt a csomag a földre esett”. Ebben a pillanatban az asszony emlékei szerint „Kizzy mindkét kezét felemelte, és azt kiáltotta: „Nincs semmim. Mit akarsz?” És megfordult, hogy elmeneküljön. Ezt követően „az egyik tiszt elektromos sokkolóval lábon lőtte Kizzyt, majd a két seriff-helyettes lelőtte”.
Tüntetők százai vonultak ki az „Angyalok városának” utcáira, hogy tiltakozzanak Dijon Kizzy agyonlövése ellen. A dühös tömeg az áldozat otthona felé vette az irányt Westmont körzetében, Los Angeles déli peremén. A város ezen területe a rendőri intézkedések elleni nyári tiltakozások forró pontjává vált. „Ők (a rendőrség) rajtunk, fekete bőrűeken kívül senki mást nem ölnek meg” – mondta a médiának Fletcher Fair, Kizzy nagynénje.
Az aktivisták felszólították Kaliforniai legfőbb ügyészét, hogy független nyomozást rendeljen el az afro-amerikai halála ügyében. Az ügyészség közölte, Kizzy többszörös sérüléseket szenvedett, de az őt eltaláló golyók pontos számát csak a boncolás után állapítják meg. Ebben a botrányos ügyben érintett tiszteket adminisztratív szabadságra küldték.
