A CNN öt amerikai és nyugati tisztségviselőre hivatkozva azt közölte, hogy az amerikai hírszerzés az év elején fedezte fel, hogy az orosz kormányzat döntött a gyilkosságról. Az orosz fél eddig semmiféle kommentárt nem fűzött a sztorihoz, ahogy sem az amerikai, sem a német hírszerzés nem nyilatkozott a konkrét esetről, és a Rheinmetall sem.
A lap névtelen forrásai szerint mindenesetre ez csupán az egyik merénylet lett volna a sok közül, amelyeket az oroszok védelmi ipari csúcsvezetők ellen szerveztek Európában. Olyan menedzsereket akarhattak likvidálni, akik támogatták Ukrajna háborús erőfeszítéseit. Azonban Armin Papperger meggyilkolásának terve volt a legkiforrottabb.
Amikor az amerikaiak értesültek a szándékról, azonnal értesítették Németországot, amelynek biztonsági szolgálatai képesek voltak megvédeni a Rehinmetall-vezért, és meghiúsították az összeesküvést. A Biden-kormány egyik magas rangú tisztviselője szerint az amerikai kémműholdak robbanást észleltek a kahovkai gáton, közvetlenül annak összeomlása előtt – számolt be róla a New York Times.
A tisztviselő elmondta, hogy az infravörös érzékelőkkel felszerelt műholdak olyan hőtani jelenséget észleltek, amely egy nagyobb robbanásra utal, közvetlenül azelőtt, hogy a gát összeomlott, és hatalmas árvizet szabadított el a Dnyeper-folyón.

Az Egyesült Államok védelmi minisztériuma szerint 2022. február 24. óta mintegy 10 orosz tábornokot likvidáltak Ukrajnában, vélhetően az amerikai hírszerzési támogatásnak köszönhetően – adta hírül az rbc.ua hírportál kedden a CNN amerikai hírtelevízióra hivatkozva.
A jelentés szerint az amerikai tisztviselők szorosan figyelemmel kísérik a megölt orosz katonatisztek növekvő számát. Úgy vélik, ez rendkívül magas szám a modern hadviselésben, amely jóval meghaladja az afganisztáni konfliktus 20 éve alatt elveszített amerikai tábornokok számát.
Egyes amerikai tisztviselők a szokatlanul magas számot az Egyesült Államok hírszerzési támogatásának tulajdonítják, míg mások úgy vélik, hogy ez annak köszönhető, hogy az orosz tábornokok kénytelenek közvetlenül a konfliktusövezetben tevékenykedni.
