A 26 éves Venheng Csao altiszt ellen összeesküvés és vesztegetés a vád, a gyanú szerint ugyanis 15 ezer dollárt fogadott el érzékeny amerikai katonai információkat tartalmazó fényképekért és videókért cserébe. A másik vádlott, a 22 éves Jincsao Vej állítólag szintén több ezer dollárt kapott azért, hogy nemzetvédelmi információkat küldjön Kínának.
Amerikai tisztviselők elmondták, hogy a két férfi akciói miatt érzékeny katonai információk kerültek a Kínai Népköztársaság kezébe.
Újságírói kérdésre azt is kifejtették, Csao 2021 augusztusától idén májusig állhatott szoros kapcsolatban a kínai hírszerzéssel, és összekötőjének az indo-csendes-óceáni térségben zajló amerikai hadgyakorlatok terveit, a japán Okinaván lévő amerikai katonai bázis radarrendszerének elektronikus tervrajzait, valamint a Ventura megyében és a Los Angeles melletti San Clemente-szigeten lévő amerikai haditengerészeti létesítmények biztonsági adatait küldte el.
Vej információkat közölhetett szolgálati helyéről, a USS Essex helikopterhordozó hajóról, valamint más amerikai hadihajókról is. Elképzelhető, hogy a USS Essex fegyverzetét és működését bemutató tucatnyi műszaki kézikönyv is kínai kézbe került.
„Vej egyszerűen hátat fordított új otthonának” – fogalmazott Randy Grossman ügyész, aki hozzátette, Vej többször is találkozott a kínai titkosszolgálat embereivel, és kapcsolattartója külön gratulált neki, amikor megkapta az amerikai állampolgárságot.
