 Jelentős számban megszaporodtak a Buruli-fekély megbetegedések Melbourne északnyugati részén – számolt be a News.com.au.
 Az egészségügyi hatóságok arra figyelmeztetik a helyieket, hogy mielőbb forduljanak orvoshoz, ha olyan bőrfekélyeket tapasztalnak magukon, amelyek nem gyógyulnak. Hozzátették, hogy érdemes elkerülni a szúnyogcsípéseket. 
 A kutatások szerint a baktérium szúnyogokon keresztül juthat be az ember szervezetébe.
 A fertőzés emberről emberre nem terjed. Ha a diagnózis késik, úgy a tünetek súlyosak lehetnek és a fekély nagysága is kiterjedhet. 
 A Buruli-fekély egy bőr- és lágyrészfertőzés, amelyet a Mycobacterium ulcerans baktérium okoz. A kórokozó által termelt toxinok elpusztítják a bőrsejteket, a kis ereket és a bőr alatti zsírt, ami a fekélyekhez és a bőr elvesztéséhez vezet.
 A lap szerint a fertőzés kezdetben gyakran fájdalommentes, és nincsenek másodlagos tünetei. A Buruli-fekély jellemzően bőrelváltozásként, például harapásként vagy bőr alatti csomóként jelenik meg, majd napok vagy hetek alatt fokozatosan nagyobbodik. Ezek főként azokon a testrészeken – boka, lábszár, karok – alakulhatnak ki, amelyek a leggyakrabban vannak szúnyogcsípésnek kitéve.
