Életét veszítette maláriában egy belga házaspár, akik szeptember végén fertőződtek meg. Egyikük sem járt olyan országban, ahol sok a maláriaszúnyog – adta hírül a Brussels Times.
Az esetet a flamand egészségügy és az antwerpeni trópusi betegségek intézete vizsgálja. A kórt a Plasmodium nevű parazita terjeszti, és a nőstény maláriaszúnyog hordozza. A parazita a csípés után a májba jut be, és onnan kerül a véráramba, ahol elszaporodik, és tönkreteszi a vörösvérsejteket, így a betegség korai szakaszában trópusi lázat okoz. A fertőzés halálos kimenetelű lehet, ha vérrögök keletkeznek az agyban.
Fertőző betegségeket nemcsak az invazív, hanem az őshonos szúnyogfajok is hordozhatnak, ezért nagyon fontos a megbetegedések monitorozása.
Az Egészségügyi Világszervezet (WHO) korábban is figyelmeztetett arra, hogy világszerte terjed a malária: 2018-ban körülbelül 228 millió megbetegedést, köztük több mint 400 ezer halálesetet tartottak számon, főként Afrikában.
A belga pár azonban nem járt sem trópusi, sem afrikai országban, így a hatóságok abból indulnak ki, hogy repülőn érkezhetett az országba a szúnyog. A pár Kampenhoutban élt, a település a Zaventem és a Melsbroek repülőtértől is 6-7 kilométerre van.
Az írás arra is kitért, hogy bár Belgiumban felbukkannak maláriás esetek, a fertőzés nagyon ritka. A trópusi betegségek intézete szerint 2015-ben 275 esetet regisztráltak, 2018-ban pedig 352-t: ezek a megbetegedések azonban olyanoknál fordultak elő, akik a malária által súlyosan érintett országokból tértek vissza.
