Legalább 22 ember meghalt, miután egy ciklon végigsöpört a dél-brazíliai Rio Grande do Sul államon.
Eduardo Leite kormányzó szerint ez az állam történetének legsúlyosabb időjárási katasztrófája, és a valaha feljegyzett legmagasabb halálos áldozatot követelő éghajlati esemény.
Mintegy 60 várost sújtott a vihar, amelyet extratrópusi ciklonnak minősítettek, és súlyos áradásokat okozott.
A halálos áldozatok közül 15-en egyetlen házban haltak meg Mucum városában.
A kormányzó elmondta, hogy a halottak között volt egy nő, akit egy mentési kísérlet során sodort el a víz.
„Sajnálom, hogy egy nő meghalt a mentési kísérletben a Taquari folyónál ” – közölte a kormányzó a közösségi médiában.
„A drót elszakadt, a nő és egy mentő lezuhant. Sajnos a nő nem élte túl, a mentő pedig súlyosan megsérült”.
Rio Grande do Sul állam kormánya közölte, hogy hétfő este óta 1650 ember vált hajléktalanná.
A televíziós felvételeken családok látszottak miközben a házaik tetején segítségért könyörögnek, amikor a víz elönti az utcákat.
Mucum városvezetése azt ajánlotta a lakosoknak, hogy keressenek ellátmányt a következő 72 órára.
