A brit külügyminisztérium hétfőn közölte, hogy ideiglenesen kivonja a nagykövetsége néhány munkatársát Libanonból.
A tárca a szomszédos Izrael és a Gázai övezet közötti konfliktus miatt már korábban is azt tanácsolta a briteknek, hogy ne utazzanak Libanonba, és arra biztatta a még az országban tartózkodó briteket, hogy távozzanak, amíg még vannak kereskedelmi járatok.
A mostani közleményben azt írták:
Dél-Libanonban, az Izraellel közös határon folyamatos aknavető- és tüzérségi tűzharcok, valamint légicsapások zajlanak. Nagy a feszültség, a helyzet figyelmeztetés nélkül is eszkalálódhat, ami befolyásolhatja vagy korlátozhatja a Libanonból való kijutási útvonalakat.
Hozzátették, hogy fennáll a zavargások veszélye is : nagyszabású tüntetések voltak többek között az USA és Franciaország nagykövetsége előtt, és további tüntetések várhatóak. Emiatt a brit nagykövetség néhány alkalmazottját és a személyzet valamennyi családtagját ideiglenesen kivonták Libanonból, de a követség folytatja a munkáját.
